Is it necessary to thread the cotton/silica/ etc thru the wick? Is it possible to lay on top of the cotton instead?

Also i have heard about "dragon coils" can someone explain the difference?

Yeah, it's necessary. A dragon coil is wicked in such a fashion that it looks like a dragon, because of the way the tails of the wick are positioned. They're usually tilted upwards at an angle. Never built one, but I may do so someday.

Heylo! I use the dragon coils, and it's really just two micro coils angled up at 45 degrees. You do not need to thread the wick through the coils with dragons, no. You can make a bed of wick that the coils lay on top of but the flavor is not nearly as good. With the micro coils, you have to use a small wrapping post to get low resistance and it's pretty freakin' hard to thread cotton through there, so most just wrap the cotton around. I would be happy to do a tutorial for you, for now take a look at the last post on the first page of this thread below. It's my latest dragon coil setup.

It is not 100% necessary. There are a lot of ways to experiment. The cotton and other wicking methods simply are supposed to act like... A sponge. They don't burn they just hold the juice next to the heat. If you fashion a tiny diameter coil, you can press it down on top of a bed of cotton and it will still vape. I have been experimenting with this concept for some time as it makes it easier to replace the wick. :)

Dragon coils are just poorly wicked nanos :D
Anything wrapped around a mandrel smaller than 1/16" (16&20 gauge needle tips, 24&26 gauge wire, sewing pins) can be wicked by simply resting on a cotton bed and produce outstanding flavor and vapor.
Anything larger than 1/16" should have cotton or silica threaded through or be completely wrapped in cotton (through-hole coils)
