It took maybe 8 attempts, but I finally completed my first successful recoil of a Protank 2! I'm waiting on some rbas from fasttech, so I decided to practice on some old heads I had lying around. Here's what I learned:
  • Use the largest drill bit that will fit in the slots of the base. I used a 1/16 bit, 28g kanthal, 9 wraps, for 1.2 ohm
  • After annealing, lay the coil and drill bit as far down the slots of the base as possible. Too high, and the coil will touch the chimney causing a short
  • The amount of cotton is far less than I first thought. Do not twist the wick, but instead twist one end to help thread. Pull through the coil until you feel just a little resistance, then stop. The cotton expands when saturated with juice, and too much or twisted cotton does not wick well resulting in burnt cotton
  • If using a flavor wick, again go light. Too much will restrict the draw, and can prevent proper wicking

After a lot of burnt cotton, I think I finally got the formula down. what's nice about rebuilding is that cotton wicks much better than whatever is in there to begin with (silica?), and I can now go up to 15 watts without getting a dry hit.

Hope this helps another amateur like me!

Correct no cotton sticks out the cup slots and you need more cotton than you use in your horizontal build as it needs to be packed in nice and tight. Because the cotton wicks well it saturates fine and because the coil is vertical when you take a draw the air flows up through the coil and not over it.

It helps if your protank has an air flow control ring to really intensify the amount of air going through the coil.

Have a play it will take a few attempts to get it right but well worth it

mikelipino, I used to rebuild my protank2 with silica and ive tried a lot of different builds but none was good. i'm certainly gonna try a new build following your steps. thanks bro!!!
btw, i have a few questions..

1- how much cotton did you use? can you post a photo?
2- what are the steps for the annealing? i've seen a lot of different ways, don't know whats the best

thanks!!!
