Two things help with your problem....make your wicks more solid and put the fill screw in. Just make sure to make your wicks smaller diameter than the wick hole or you will have serious wicking issues with the fill screw in. The juice getting darker and darker does't have any thing to do with an oxidized mesh. Oxidized meshes do however give off small carbon particles that start to float in your juice....that is a good reason to never oxidize your meshes.

I've been having the same issue. More mesh in the wick makes sense, I'll try that, but why is the fill screw needed?

I'm getting an IGO-L hopefully by the end of the week, it will be my first RBA. I'm going to try SS wrapped around silica or cotton so the SS is just under the coil and gets fed from whatever is inside.

Should I oxidize at all for this or just a light lighter burn? The SS won't be touching anything but the coil so is there a danger of shorting at all?

I saw a video where Todd just pulsed an ego for like 30 minutes to get his coils lit up on a pure on a non oxidized wick.

Any tips ?

The metal to metal (SS Mesh to Coil) is what shorts. Oxidize some juice on the mesh by just putting juice on the mesh and then lighting it on fire. do that a few times. Only where the coil meets the mesh. No need to get the mesh glowing red, that's where it starts to oxidize.

And do it in a well ventilated area. Especially when burning VG.

How long do you keep your un-oxidized wicks going? I have cleaned my wicks only once since Feb 22 and they are still working great.
i dont even take them out anymore, what i have been doing is with a syringe fill the tank with water and fire the coil basically "steam cleaning" the wick, then drain, do a couple burns, refill then go.
