Don't buy A Soldering Gun Its Too Big And Not Needed.

Get A Standard Pencil Tip Soldering Iron, If Your Only Soldering Small Wires U Can Get A Low Watt Unit. If You Are Going To Solder Bigger Items Going Higher Soldering Unit. U Should Be Fine with a 15 to 30 watt Soldering Iron for General Purpose Use...

Don't Forget Some Flux, Electronic Solder, Food Grade Epoxy, Small Shrink Wrap, Small Wire Cutters, Small Needle Nose Pliers, Some 24 Guageish Stranded Hook Up Wire, Etc.

If U Go to The CellShack, Find 1 of them not on a phone should be able to help u.

Hope That Helps

This Xytronic unit is $49.95. Features include variable temperature, replaceable tips, great cleaning wool in the iron base and fast heat up.

Xytronic 379 Temperature Controlled Soldering Station

This may be overkill for a few mods, but if you do any other soldering/de-soldering, you really cannot beat the price. I built an entire vacuum tube audio system with this iron so I can tell you that performance is excellent.

That's a nice setup - I may have to invest in one of those.

A $300 soldering gun? That's insane. For $300 it should do all the work for you automatically.

I use a cordless one that runs on butane. I got it off eBay for under $10.

You can always tell the ones that only do hobby soldering... You think 300 is expensive? Check these out...

Micro soldering station... $520
Power Tools & Metalworking > Electric > Soldering and Desoldering Stations > Micro Rework Soldering Station,40 W : Grainger Industrial Supply

Rework station $2.1k

Power Tools & Metalworking > Electric > Soldering and Desoldering Stations > Rework System,400W,150-999 F,120 V : Grainger Industrial Supply

And thats just from one website. It can go up to $5k for one station.

Yes, I have worked with all of these models... You would be surprised how often you can use those extra gadgets when working on some boards.

kr0nicle, for us mere hobbyists, it shouldn't be a problem to find a half-way decent and useable pen-style soldering iron for less than $50. If you don't like the ones at Radio Shack and Walmart as already suggested, try your local home improvement store (Lowes, Home Depot, etc).

I will tell you that I recently purchased the 40 watt Radio Shack pen-style and was not very impressed with it. I have also conducted a lot of soldering in the past with butane irons (torches that have soldering tip attachments) with pretty good success, but didn't want to have the associated excess heat around some of the tight plastic confines of some of these box mods I've been playing around with, lately. However, they can definitely be had for under $25. My latest purchase was the battery operated soldering iron from Radio Shack. An associate there suggested it since he and his friends use it for their PS3 mods, so I figured I would give it a try. I'm pleased to say that it works very well. Tip heats up very quickly, cools down very quickly, melts solder into solder joints very well without excess heat running the risk of melting nearby plastic or circuitry. Price was $19.99 The only thing I can't comment on is how long it can run on it's batteries (takes 4 x AA) before needing replacing. Good luck!

I have a Weller soldering gun, but it was too bulky and impractical for modding PVs. Purchased it years ago at Home Depot. About $30.
Weller 100/140 Watt Universal Electric Soldering Gun Kit - 8200PKS at The Home Depot

For PV modding, I use a Weller similar to this one, also available at Home Depot. Costs about $18.
Weller 40 Watt Soldering Kit - SP40LK at The Home Depot

I'm not a fan of Home Depot, but for years they were the only home improvement store nearby. Any home improvement store should have soldering irons in the Tools section.
