Heh! Reminds me of the exchange between Russell Nash and officer Garfield in Highlander.
I was in a store several days ago. The ecig got noticed and interest was generated. At one point while everyone was standing around, one person said... oh no! I can't be anywhere around that! And then left the area.
Later I saw them and asked what, why... being curious. They were reluctant to tell me, but come to find out that the "sweet" smell the ecig puts out smells like crack. That person had been an addict and was 18 months recovered.
Perhaps that guy had smelled the sweet smell when he was walking by... and, if he did and recognized the smell, then you have your answer as to why he said what he said, perhaps??? Just an idea.

Had a client that smoked crack. They usually will either buy them from a headshop (like a glass pen with a bulb at the end) or they will convert a pen somehow. I am sure a 510 looks nothing like a traditional crack pipe.

Just my $0.02 for what it's worth, when I was a teenager (and doing lots of stupid stuff.. like starting smoking in the first place) I did .... a time or two (never got addicted to it thankfully) and I can say first hand that certain flavors have a smell similar to PART of the smell that's produced when smoking ...., the after taste can be similar as well... when I say part it would be like saying that something smelled like a creek out in the woods just because you smelled dirt (IE: the smell minus the water and tree scents) if that makes any sense? .... just trying to help out
