Bit of an aside here..
But the government has this one figured out also.
Notice since tax-free native cigarettes have come on the market, there have been a lot fewer grants to 1st nations, and a lot less screaming from them for more money?
But hang on - There is something great about this imo. I have been talking about this for 10+ years to everyone from NDP MPs and CPC MPs and so far I get mostly blank stares,
however,
I've been saying the USA is really ahead of us. I say go ahead and give native Rez's one last 'handout' (so to speak) and yes yes - let them have casinos and cigarettes. Go ahead! Good! Further more I hope they make a fortune off of it. Good! As far as I'm concerned this is 100 times better than flooding reserves with cash and... well... sorry to say but I grew up a few years on a rez and know what happens.
I did notice Canada has been slowly moving to that but the Americans have shown where that works great. There is little or no actual money and grants to some Reserves down there. Instead, they get casinos (
tobacco I dont know down there?) and the more they master their businesses - the richer they become. and there are some RICH wealthy reserves down there and further more now some pretty damn good native business people sending kids to even better business schools etc and they are 100% independent, fully proud in their own rights (and deserve it) and don't rely on any 'parents' to help them do anything. I like it. In principle at least.
*but leave it to government to totally screw it up anyways sorry to say lol*
