Hi all! I am new to e-smoking, but know for sure that I will be receiving a kit for my birthday in August. I have been a heavy, pack a day smoker since I was about 16 (Don't worry! I'm 21 now, so officially of age!). I am so sick and tired of waking up coughing my brains out, I am sick and tired of my teeth being gross, and I am sick and tired of my boyfriend complaining that I stink. So needless to say, I am SUPER excited to start vaping.

So, my question to people who have used e cigs for a while, do you still have the smokers cough? How long (in general) does the cough take to go away? Also, with regards to sense of taste/smell, how long does that take to return to normal? I seem to be putting a lot of salt on everything lately...lol

I took about a month for smell to really come back, and boy!! were there some thing around the house that had to go! Taste took a little longer for me. I smoked for the better part of 60 years (ya I know, I'm old), so I don't exactly have a set of pristine lungs to work with, but the constant coughing and hacking diminished almost immediately.

The best part about vaping IMO is that I haven't had so much as the sniffles in all the time I've been vaping. You see, the PG used in our juices is the exact same PG that hospitals atomize into their ventilation systems to reduce airborne bacteria and virus. Every time you blow vapor onto your hands it is like using one of those hand sanitizing gels.

Back when I was on analogs, my nose ans sinuses were ALWAYS clogged up, My fiance looks at me on night in bed after I had switched to vaping, and just started smiling, I asked what and she said " It's just wonderful to hear yuo breathing through your nose instead of gasping through yuor mouth"

From 1-1.5 packs a day to 0 full stop (which is helping curb on my "other" smoking, though not completely). The day after my first full day of vaping was the first day in a long while I woke up without a cough/gurgle. I was also starting to feel pain in my lungs sometimes (particularly after a cigarette) and they've already lessened significantly after 3 days. My taste is still pretty off, I have two flavours of juice that are apparently quite different, but I can't really tell. I smoked for 20 years so I expect it will take a bit of time for everything to really start recovering with gusto.

Greetings fellow Canuck! Welcome to ECF!

The effects, or some of them anyway, begin almost immediately. You do not have to completely stop smoking when you start vaping, but the less you smoke the better off you are. Each cigarette not smoked is progress. If you start to taper off now, you can begin counting the ones you haven't smoked. Keep track, they add up quickly!

(How about asking for that present early?!)

I'm at the end of my 3rd day of vaping. I stopped smoking the moment I picked up the e-cig and put it into my mouth and I don't even want a cig.
It's so strange, I've tried all the other ways of quitting... cold turkey, patches, inhalers, prescribed pills, chewing gum even some nasty spray thing which burnt like hell and no matter what it was, I still wanted to smoke (except when I was on the pills but they were making me sick)

After 3 days, I'm relaxed, breathing though my nose and just feel "better" in general.

While you wait for your e-cig, why not buy disposable ones for now just to get a feel of it? They are cheaper than a pack of cigs and last about 2 - 3 days making them well worth the money for someone who is wanting to "try" vaping out or for someone like you who is simply waiting for the real deal to arrive.

That's a Great suggestion, however we cannot buy e-cigs with nicotine in stores in Canada!

We can buy a pack of 5 cartos (no-nic) for $25, however any disposable does not have nicotine.

    Welcome to our World!

Seven days in and my cough is reduced dramatically. I used to almost sound like a barking dog. It was embarrassing. I still cough some, and I'm still hacking up nasty stuff on occasion, but every day I feel a little better. My smell is absolutely getting more acute, taste, it's hard to tell, chain vaping dries out my mouth fiercely.

Now it's hard to tell for me whether the coughs that vaping cause me are caused by a throat that's been abused for years that's still healing, just me getting used to mainly PG based 18mg ejuice, or my throat just getting dry.

Thank you all for the great responses!

I figured I would come back and update on my experience, since I had not started vaping when I posted this thread.

I am now into my second full day of vaping, and I am loving every second of it. Since around 8 PM EST on Aug 26th, I have been completely analog free! Some posters in this thread mentioned that there was no need to quit analogs, but the whole point when I decided to switch to vaping was to never buy analogs again. Well, since I began with my E-cig, I haven't even had a single craving for a real cig. I love the taste, the feel, the smell. I love everything about my e-cig.

During my first day of vaping, I noticed my throat was a little sore, and that I was actually coughing MORE that usual. Of course, this was due to all the gunk coming out of my lungs, and as of today I am breathing quite well. I didn't even cough once this morning when I woke up! It was actually pretty weird to wake up and be able to take a nice, deep breath!

I will come back and update here once my taste and smell change. I can't wait to reach that 2 week mark. Since I started smoking, I've never gone more than 14 hours (plane ride lol) without a cig. And, I can confidently say that I really don't ever want to smoke one again.

SO FREAKING HAPPY with my e-cig. I don't know why anyone still smokes analogs when these contraptions are so amazing.

    Just over two months in.

Lung function has improved dramatically from my last post in here. 1 set of stairs used to wind me, now 3 flights of stairs going 2*, no problem, BRING IT!

Caught a cold, what normally would have left me bed-ridden for a week only left me out of the game for 2 days. Week later I'm mostly cleared.

Another side effect, I'm not sure if it's linked to the e-cigs or not, but I seem to have become a dynamo. Sleeping 6 hours at most, after the first 4 I have to force myself to not get up. I just can't seem to turn off. This is not a negative, yet, as I am not feeling terribly drained.

Well I have been off the real cigs since Feb...Been vaping ever since. I just had some blood work done and my cholesterol is down 32 points and my triglyceride levels are down 73 points! :)

    That's awesome!! Good for you, Freebird79! :)
The people who intorduced me to e-cigs have been vaping since Feb also, and they've had nothing but good things to say.

They actually purchased my first starter kit for me! So awesome. :p

I am SO looking forward to my first winter cold, since I get one every year that lasts half of the winter (lol). I also get recurring bronchitis every year. Maybe this year it will only last a few days?

I already don't sleep nearly enough. If I start sleeping for 4 hours and wanting to wake up, I might cry! Although, with what I'm getting myself into with school this semester, sleep is going to be my best friend! I'd be surprised if, in October, I sleep anything less than 10 hours on weekends! :p

Happy early birthday! Cough: no. Taste and smell: Varies by individual, but it will come back and you will be amazed. I agree with earlier advice: If you can't stand it without a cigarette, have one. You might be fine with just vaping immediately (I was), or you might have to taper down. I'm betting you at the very least cut it in half immediately. Keep us posted on what you get and how you're doing!

Honestly, the only times I really crave a real cig are when I first wake up in the morning, and after I eat. But I just pick up my E-cig and totally forget that analogs exist.

I will definitely continue to update this this thread as my improvements continue! :)
