I have a goal zero Sherpa 50 power pack and solar panel with inverter. I will also be getting another generator before this winter. Mine scattered during the last 3 day outtage. I also have a big 12v battery and inverter that is backup for my security cams in case I lose power. Another handy tool is one of those jumper packs for car batteries. I have one of those that has a USB port. Lots of options these days.

So California
Last camping trip was frustrating, couldn't keep my spinner charged enough in the car(as we reached our destination) , so I was determined to find a charger power pack, I did want solar- but reviews are discouraging and cost more than I thought. I did find this: https://www.fasttech.com/p/1353702
It works good, and will take care of my cell, spinners, mp3...etc.

Nice! I guess I understand the... independence of having solar? But it just takes so long doesn't it? Or am I being ignorant? Plus you're depending on having sunlight, which in a weather emergency, might not be all that available!

Great idea to be prepared! Maybe have some disposables on hand too, Flings are cheap and sealed in a plastic wrapper, would be great for emergencies. bnrk

Good point! Although like my fashion sense... I have become something of a snob when it comes to vaping... hmmm... I guess desperate times call for desperate measures.

Since you are a camper... I have a biolite camp stove. It uses the heat from the fire to generate electric to charge devices... Probably be good for power outages too.

LOL.. indeed... throw in a box of Cheez-Its and I'm set for any emergency.

Or....just find a Dunkin' Donuts up and running on generators, with working electrical outlets and all....which we were lucky to find.

Sandy pounded my area as well. I can be patient and go without power for a while, but no power to the house for 5 days. Much tougher than I imagined in this day and age.
Had the propane grill, a portable power unit / inverter (recharged in the car), and not much else.

Can't have too many portable power gadgets.
(And thanks for reminding me to pick up a portable generator....lol)

Hope all is coming back better than new at the Jersey Shore..........

I have a phobia about losing power. First thing we did after moving to the new house was to get a Generac 36KW natural gas system installed. A lighting strike during a storm the day before yesterday took out a transformer and power to the entire neighborhood for 7 hours- except for our house.

After Sandy, that's our ultimate goal... but we've only been in this house for two years, got bigger projects that have to come first...

I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately, thanks for starting the convo OP.
I'm on Northern Neck Electric and they suck. It doesn't take much for our power to go out and it can take awhile to get it back on.
I've been working on getting to the point where a power outage doesn't bother me. Love my french press and looking for a good hand crank coffee grinder. Now that I've started vaping I've been looking at how to be able to keep it up without power.
I've been looking at one of these
Amazon.com: American Red Cross FRX3 Hand Turbine NOAA AM/FM Weather Alert Radio with Smartphone Charger - Red (ARCFRX3WXR): Electronics

Now to just figure out an EMP safe vaping kit

These seem to get pretty good reviews:
Lehman's coffee grinder.

Or you could go nuts and get a Country Living Grain Mill with the optional bean auger.

Whatever you do, don't go for one of the $20 metal grain grinders. They don't work well, the plating flakes off into whatever you're grinding, and the metal can chip or break.

We grind our own grains for almost all of our flour and whatnot. Cheap mills suck and aren't worth the money. Seriously. Buy once, cry once.

Check this out, for your grinder: Hario MSS-1B Mini Mill Slim Coffee Grinder: Kitchen & Dining: Amazon.com

I've seen people discussing an EMP-safe storage box. Not sure where you'd find it, but they're out there.

Don't forget a manual can opener! (Those cans of Dinty Moore beef stew don't open themselves!)
