The best answer I can think of would be buying it from a reputable source or looking at pics online and comparing.

Got mine on ebay late June. XSmart charger and two vtc5 batteries for $28.19. Seller appears suspended at the moment so they could be fakes. Sun Vapers put pictures of some ebay fakes on How to spot a fake Sony VTC5 battery Mine only matches the fake with the black stamp, ALL other details match the real one. I will probably have to load test and log the curve to be sure.
Bought one at one of the local b&m vape shops tonight for $15. Didn't even look at it until I got home and got my feelings really hurt. Failed every single one of Sun Vapers tests. Guess that's what I get for trying to support local business.
I have been searching for hours and I've found what I believe to be genuine Sony VTC4's at https://cravingvapor.com/product/sony-vtc-series-batteries/
I called and spoke to a customer service rep, who confirmed their authenticity. RIP Trippers has also mentioned Craving Vapors as a reputable source in one of his past videos.

Sorry about the poor picture quality. All I have is my phone camera.
So - there are crq codes on both - one is aligned with the label, one is not. The CRQ codes are made out of small round dots, not squares. One battery has the CRQ aligned with the label, the other is not aligned (on the other side of the battery).
Terminals look clean and flat.
The seams don't look too bad, but since I don't know if I've ever seen a "real" VTC, this isn't an easy comparison point for me.
It was warm in the mailbox and the batteries were warm but both tested at 3.6v out of the box. I'm letting them fully cool to room temperature, then I will charge them both and see how it goes.
