I bought some from somuchtocell2012, but after reading here about all the fakes, he agreed to take them back--seems like a nice /honest person, but the batts had a seam in the wrapper & no IR stamp. Chinese knockoffs?

He tells me he is absolutely sure they are real Sony's meant for mfr.'s of laptops, but all the reputable sites I visited say "discontinued". "out of stock" , "no longer available", etc., or they just don't even carry them. He indicated that they may have been produced for Sony by other batt. mfr.'s. His company bought a 10 ton container load of them!
Sony itself has indicated that their 18650's were never released for sale to the public, but only to OEM's of laptops, etc.

No more ebay/Amazon batt's for me!

Yup, I agree with you and mrkaos. I would not buy batteries for vaping from any supplier that I was not familiar enough with to know they will not sell me counterfeits.

BTW, VTC batteries do not go into laptops. They are designed for high output devices like power tools. Laptops use higher mAh, lower amp batts and those are the ones we should be staying away from in vaping.

I'll add this to this thread so people know where they can go to get batteries.

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

Many laptops back in the day used several 18650 batteries enclosed in the plastic casing. Even today's laptop batteries have several "cells" which sometimes can resemble the batteries we are used to seeing.

I bought some from this ebay seller as well, they work good so far, but I haven't pushed them any lower than .4 ohms. This is what mine look like, and from what I can tell, they seem to look real compared to fakes, but who's to say.. haha. I have no idea, but I don't plan on pushing them too far 20141208_180442.jpg20141208_180506.jpgreceived_10204325950263186.jpgreceived_10204325950743198.jpgreceived_10204325950983204.jpg

How to spot a fake Sony VTC5 battery

Finding VTC4's are like finding a needle in a haystack from the reputable battery vendors. Someday I will catch them in stock and pick me up 4 :)

Yeah they're really hard to find. I know Lightning Vapes the people sell resistance wire have some in stock right now. I don't know about their authenticity. I also found some 2 days ago at Origin Vape in NYC. The site says that they're straight from Xtar. So I guess I'll see tomorrow when they get here if they're real or fake.

Yes, certainly 18650 size cells are used in laptop battery packs, but not high amp output, lower mAh cells like the VTCx series. Laptops are not high power devices so it's advantageous to use the higher mAh, lower amp cells for longer run time.

Fake Sony's today tomorrow will be Samsung and LG.............Lots and lots of accusations pretty much all of them cant be said one way or the other without properly testing them. It has been done a couple times and some fakes were found on a couple of occasions but really that is it. Nobody knows the truth and never will.
