hi everyone here is another sony battery discussion. I have not put much thought into it, but I bought my vtc4s from a local shop in town, and I bought my vtc5s online. while I was at the shop the other day; we were talking batteries because I just bought a vamped battery. the guy said sonys are not sonys, look at the website they don't sell batteries. I went to www.sony.com they don't. so I don't want a heated discussion just some info. is there another website they use, or do they out source? by that someone else make them for them.

Sony makes batteries....

if you have some VTC4's or 5's you will see the first 2 letters are SE ( Sony Electronics) on the first line of text
third line states Sony once again....

the batteries are for ( generally) manufacturer use, not intended for public use like Duracell etc... but things worked out to a point where we can get them...

In a nutshell, the green VTC series of batteries are made by Sony. They were never intended for sale for general consumer use, or as single cell application use, hence why you can't find them on consumer Sony catelogs. They were specifically designed to be used in proprietary power tools or other applications in battery packs with built-in over current power protection. Some battery resellers have offered the VTC series for general consumer use (not approved by Sony) and those are the vendors that mod users obtain their VTC batteries from.

There has been a shortage of these batteries recently because the faciltiy that was making them in Japan was forced to shut down due to being in close proximity to the nuclear power plant catastrophe last year. A new plant was constructed in the Phillipines, and is now nearing 100% manufacturing capacity.
