It's been many years since I had a white Christmas. My husband has never had one. That all changed last week!

It snowed in Pigeon Forge, TN starting in the wee early morning hours of Christmas Day. Now the place we rented a cabin from said that we weren't very high up and we should have no trouble getting in and out. HA! We spun tires just to get into the place from the driveway....and that was before it snowed. We were supposed to check out Monday morning. Since we were quite elevated, we would have had to drive on snow and ice on Monday, but just snow on Sunday. And at that time, it was still snowing 1/2 inch every hour. Having lived in Alaska and Germany, I knew that you have more traction on snow than snow over ice. My husband, his mom, and myself all agreed that if we didn't leave then, we'd be there until Tuesday, as yesterday's high was going to be 29 degrees. I honestly think we got 20 - 24 inches of snow and were on what they call a secondary road.

The cabin was lovely....chalet style, with no curtains or blinds to cover the windows from the bright sun on Christmas Eve. I had to sit in sunglasses as I have a sensitivity to bright lights. There were 3 sets of stairs just to get to the door, with a sidewalk between steps 1 and 2. The sidewalk was like walking straight up a mountain slope. The angle was ridiculous. The fireplace was beautiful...stone. We had plenty of wood, but unfortunately, it was stacked under the set of stairs #1. So, husband goes down to get some wood and all of a sudden, I see logs being chucked onto 2nd landing. Well of course I just burst out into peels of laughter. My mom-in-law didn't know what was so funny, so I explained about the commercial w/wood chucks and what we've posted on here. It really lost something in the translation. She watches very little tv. I couldn't wait to get back to tell ya'll that story.

Okay, back to the story. All 3 of us felt the need to leave if at all possible. The folks on a lower road than us left on Sunday afternoon. So mom-in-law and I pack up and husband loaded the car. You have to remember we also had our 3 little dogs. Before we rolled an inch, husband wanted prayer. So I asked the Lord for Warrior Angels at all 4 corners of the car and safety to get to the valley. I felt at peace about it. I gave instructions on how to drive in snow, etc., and I continued to pray and mom-in-law was singing praises. Somehow, we wound up in a ditch. Not too bad, but we couldn't get out. I'm saying, "Uh, Lord, You told me we'd be safe all the way down....." Mom-in-law wanted to call a wrecker, as husband couldn't push Explorer out of the ditch. He tried once more then put the car in park and when he did, it felt like we could fanaggle it......and we got out of the ditch!!! Husband said it was as if we were being pushed out from the back. We made it down to the valley and was hoping to get further than we did, but it was dark and we kept skidding from black ice, so we found a motel that would take pets. We left yesterday around 11:00 a.m. est, and it was smooth sailing all the way home ...... THANK YOU JESUS!

LOL!!!!! She didn't get the wood chuck joke, huh??????? LOL!!!!!!!!!:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I"m glad you had a great time and made it home safely! We just got out today for the first time since it started, when, on saturday I think? Been snowed in that long!!!!!!

Hubby prepared ahead of time tho, he chucked alot of wood!!! And also bought a ton of groceries ahead of time too, but we ran out of rock salt for the dogs a few days ago. We have 2 dogs with hip dysplasia, and their dog door leads out to steps that go down to the deck, then another set of steps that go down to the ground. We have wheelchair ramps over the steps so they can easily walk up and down without hurting their hips. Well, needless to say those ramps were like ice skating rinks after we ran out of ice.

So, hubby had to get out today to get to the store. Sounds easy, but it's not when the road isn't plowed, you live on top of a mountain, one lane road with no guard rails, and no room for error or you go off the edge and it's a long way down!!!!!!! :?:

There were abandoned cars all along the road from people that tried to get out, but couldn't do it, so they just leave their cars and walk home. It's a mess! The people here tell me that it hasn't snowed like this here for like 100 years, and my first winter up here we get a freaking blizzard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!

Oh well, we're still alive tho. :2cool:

When we took off from MS, the weather in east TN stated snow flurries on Christmas Day. We did have the insurance on the rental of this cabin, but when we got there, after being told 'Oh it's not very high up at all!' husband called them and they said everything was booked and they couldn't relocate us. He tried to use the insurance we purchased and they told him it didn't cover that. So, it's all in dispute through the CC folks and these cabin folks. Last year we rented a cabin from Hearthside Cabins and they were awesome.

Husband found out about the snow coming on the 24th and we had plenty of food and all, but getting out by Monday morning safely was another thing. I honestly think that if we hadn't gotten out when we did, we would have been stuck big time. Lisa, I did think about you on a mountain being stuck. I had a feeling that you guys were covered up to your necks! I know all about being snowed in without clear roads. It would have been perfect for a honeymoon, but with the menagerie we had, husband and mom-in-law were extremely concerned. When the Lord impressed upon me that we needed to leave and soon, and we all agreed, man, we were like a band of gypsies. We were packed up and gone within forty five minutes and we had some STUFF! I definitely got my snow quota for the next 10 years. It was absolutely beautiful.....and I enjoyed the actual snow....found out I can't throw a snowball and hit someone for beans....pout. There was already a Christmas tree in the chalet....it was more like a chalet. There were no lights! Now what was up with THAT! I mean to tell you, that if you lie and stick us up on a mountain, with narrow roads, lie to us about the insurance and description of the house, there had better be some stupid lights on their stupid tree! Oh, then they left a note to all renters to buy an ornament to go on the tree! Without lights, it ain't a tree! We left a canister of Folger's coffee, accidentally. Let them put THAT on their tree! Needless to say, we won't use that rental company again.:grr::nah:

There were all kinds of ornaments on the tree, but the house isn't that old. Oh, and they wanted the 'bear theme' ornaments. The place was decorated throughout with a 'bear' theme. The place was even named 'Bear-riffic View.' We were protected if we had seen one, but we didn't see any bears.....Praise God!!!!!!!!!!:p
