Very new in RTA, I've tried different wick materials and I selected Rayon as my preferred one over organic or Japanese cottons. However, I notice a spicy taste at the beginning of my vape on a new build. I use 24 gauge Ti from Unkamen, 10 wraps at 2.5mm diameter, ~0.35 ohms Ti coils in TC, alcohol and heat cleaned on a Kayfun Lite Plus V2 with progressive raise of the temperature as I start vaping. My Rayon is made by Graham (44060) from the local beauty supplies store. This spicy taste feels almost like nicotine, a bit irritating in my throat and airways and it fades away after a little while before the full flavor of my juice kicks in. This is also happening no matter which juice I am using. Does anyone experienced that? What could be that taste? Thanks!

This is a classic symptom of too tight wicking. I get the same thing when I wick it too tight. Once the flavour goes away the wick is great though. Rayon is a tad finnicky to get it just right but once you get the hang of the density you need in the coil it comes natural. Better too tight than too loose anyhow. Like you said, once it breaks in it's smooth sailing.

That's true, I tend to set my wick tight, first thinking the more I can put in, the more juice I can get through, the better it is. In the mean time, while building, I was thinking that if the wick is too tight then the juice might no go smoothly trough. I've been lacking consistency though so I am gonna work on that. I really prefer this material over cotton. Thank you!

I think that rayon is so clean you get a little of the metal taste before the coil burns in. At least that's my take on it!

That's possible... I had the Chemical Ti coil taste in my first builds before I learn from folks around here that I had to dry heat the coil to clean it, which was right on. Of course, not too much heat to avoid oxidation and TiO2 formation, which I experienced to determine the oxidation temp (theoretical 600oC for a little while, bright orange coil) which is much higher than the temps we are using to produce the vapor.

This is the place to learn everything rayon if you're interested Rayon Wick - Better Flow, Flavor, Longevity, and Nic Hit!! - Pt.2

I remember reading this thread long before I started RTA. I thought that Rayon was an interesting material especially because it's pure cellulose, a very long chain of carbohydrate naturally generated by plants that is quite resistant. I thought that this material must be great to conduct eliquid to the coil. When I started taking apart the BVC coil of my Nautilus mini, I noticed the burned cotton and decided to rebuild them with rayon instead with quite some success with kanthal and later on with Ti coils. This was when I started to be interested in RTA and purchased the Kayfun Lite Plus 1:1 Clone that I received from Fasttech last week. I like it but I am thinking of getting another RTA tank for MTL vaping, but I'am quite overwhelmed by the diversity of gears available... I am having the best vape I had to date so far and gathering more knowledge as I go. I need to learn more about the art of wicking right now. Thank you for providing this link, I will bookmark it this time.
