Splash VV Problem

My splash VV mod with display built in cuts off with a LR cartomizer between 3.7-4.3v. I think its a short, but Im not sure. How would I go about checking and how could I fix it?

Is it working below and above that voltage range?

For the most part, but it only does it when I chain vape. If I space my vapes out its fine, but whens I take a couple hits back to back thats when the problems start. I think it has something to do with the heatsink (I think thats what it is) overheating maybe? It seems to get very hot very fast. And then it turns itself off for a few sec, then turns back on.

Sounds like the regulator is going into thermal shutdown; you may just be reaching the limits of the regulator. If possible, try adding another heatsink to the regulator; Radioshack has heatsinks that should work if you can access the regulator.

So this may be asking too much but could you explain how I would go about adding another heatsink to it? I have basic soldering and modding skills, but not enough to do this properly.

You shouldn't need to do any soldering. Actually if there's room for the heatsink, get some 'thermal grease' or heatsink grease, apply some to the part of the heatsink that will contact the regulator and press the heatsink onto the regulator. The thermal grease ensures a good thermal transfer from the regulator to the heatsink. You may want to add a small dab of epoxy from the heatsink to some nearby 'structure' to secure the heatsink.

I believe this should work for an 'after market' heatsink addition

The regulator is the part that is heating up a lot yes? Sorry I think I know what things are but just want to make sure. And the heatsink would go on the metal part of the regulator?

The regulator will be the part that is heating up. It has a matte black 'block' on a silver metal 'base'. If you can access the metal 'base', that's the best side on which to place the heatsink.

Cool thats what I thought. Unfortunately my radio shack did not carry a heatsink small enough to fit on it. Hopefully I can find some other place that carries them.

3 Pennies wedged between it and the battery holder did the trick. No more thermal shut down.

Just be careful, the metal base of the regulator is usually connected to one of the pins, so you don't want the pennies touching any exposed wires or any other metal components.

Square aluminum tubing to make a heatsink works really well. The alum draws the heat from the chip and the tube shape allows the heat to escape quickly (air flow). I used plain vasoline to enhance contact with the chip.

I might use some vasoline thats a good idea. I cut of piece of rubber to fit between the pennies and exposed wiring. Works great though. Thanks guys for all your help. Great to have a mod working again.
