Someone will jump in and defend mesh, but I'd say go for cotton.
It requires little prep (no scorching or precise rolling), is cheap, facilitates microcoiling, never shorts, wicks very well, provides better flavour (some say), and is easily replaceable without requiring recoiling.
Thinking of anyone in particular?
Ultimately, it's all about personal preference. I'll just add my

for the mesh.
Mesh can be tricky to learn how to set up properly. Not to argue, but I don't do any precise rolling or scorching of wicks. I just roll, juice burn, pulse and go. Done deal. Ready for many months of vaping with a dry-burn once or twice a month. (I don't vape liquids thick on flavor that gunk up coils quickly)
Where mesh shines is purity of flavor, durability, reliability and very low maintenance compared to the soft wicks. I see the aggravation of the initial learning curve as a trade-off. You can take all the aggravation "up front", or you can take the aggravation in small portions for ever. I'm talking about the more frequent wick replacement of cotton and silica. I'm all about picking up an e-cig, pressing a button, vaping and be done with it. I can't stand doing maintenance every few days.
Setting up a mesh wick is not hard or time consuming.
Learning to set up a mesh wick can be hard and time consuming. It does require some dedication. If you just want to see what it's all about and don't really really want to learn how to do it; it's not for you.
