I thought I had everything covered. Including mechs for long term security. Then I blew the hot spring in a mech.

I suddenly realized that a few years from now I could be sitting here with a bunch of nic, no more regulated mods, and several nice mechs that I couldn't use because I burned up the last spring.

Anyway my question is this. I've got springs in several mods, including regulated tube mods. They all appear to be the same size. Is that something I need to stock up on? Or are they items that are used for other purposes, like flashlights?

Not sure, Mick, since I don't have any mods that use them, but I think the hot springs are a "special" metal, designed to lose their "spring" if they go over a specific temp, thus disconnecting the battery. Regular springs might work to vape, but you lose that protection - an important one for mechs.

So getting a few spares might be in order. (Unless you can positively guarantee that you'll NEVER have a bad coil!)

I just did some googling. Lots of springs out there but none that mentioned collapsible when they get hot so maybe it is a vaping only invention, meaning got to get them now. Can't help thinking those flashlight and RC people have something going on though. And I wonder where the vaping manufacturers get them.

Looks like I'll have to lay in some spares. I think I know how I messed up this time so that shouldn't happen again. Do I budget for killing a spring once a year, 10 per decade? Having enough nic for decades do I need dozens of springs? They come in around $2.50 each. It could get expensive. But ending up with everything I need except for springs would be a bummer.

I wonder what else I haven't thought about yet.

FWIW, englishmick, four springs cost about as much as a pack of cigarettes do in the Chicago area.

So, do the math. Picking up a fistful of springs seems like cheap insurance to me.

Righto! Keep things in perspective. For example, 100 mg nic, typically $50 a liter (not counting sales.) Here, a carton of smokes runs to about $80...

I was going to add that AltSmoke sells "hot springs" for their Silver Bullet/Omega mechanical mods, but mikepetro beat me to it. The Reo bottom feeder mechanical box mod also uses a hot spring, although I don't know if it will fit in a tube mechanical mod.

Altsmoke are currently OOS on the SB sized springs. I'm guessing the BB ones are smaller. I found these at Avid Vaper for $2.50, in the comments someone said they work in SB's. I ordered a dozen. Assuming I can avoid being an idiot too often that should keep me going.

Incidentally I narrowed my spring problem down to most likely the result of neglecting to keep the ends of the spring clean. Apparently that causes overheating where the spring contacts the battery. Or just possibly forgetting to take my thumb off the button. I've done that before. Normally the crackling noise from the coil wakes me up.

I've been using my Silver Bullet for over four years and never had a hot spring collapse. I did collapse a hot spring in an AlSmoke BB about 5 years ago, but that was due to user error in allowing the protruding fire button become compressed for an extended period of time.

In preparing for the vape apocalypse, I inquired a few weeks ago at the AltSmoke B & M if they still sold Silver Bullet hot springs and the manager said that AltSmoke had pulled all of their Silver Bullet stock from their stores.

I don't know if AltSmoke is going to apply for the FDA application for Silver Bullets or not. There had been some talk in the past of them discontinuing their mod lineup.

I just checked their website and it appears you can order the Silver Bullets online still.

Might be worth a shot sending them an email and inquiring about replacement parts.

Yeah, or I could ask Rocks82 on the Altsmoke Supplier Forum, too. :thumb:
