Hi,
I am new to this forum and recently got into doing my e-liquid diy.
I always get concerned about keeping my nicotine in clear plastic bottles in case the light will effect it, or keeping it in glass bottles in case it gets dropped and breaks.

I was thinking of storing it inside of aluminium bottles so that no light will get in and there would be no chance of it breaking but i don’t know if the nicotine would react with the aluminium.

Does anyone know if this would be a problem?

Hi rev master,
I wouldn't put it in aluminum, but I'm not a chemist. :)

The entire issue with storing nicotine in plastic bottles is in regards to BPA leaching. I always transfer all my juices to amber glass bottles. As for aluminum you have to be careful about which brand you use.

Also raw aluminum has been linked through many studies to Alzheimer's Disease, requiring such bottles to use a protective inner coating or lining. Aluminum bottle manufacturers use an oven enamel to coat their bottles to prevent the aluminum from leaching. While these linings appear to be reliable, it's possible the lining will flake off over time...especially if the bottle is dented or exposed to extreme environments. In fact, the lining is so delicate that many aluminum bottle manufactures warn that their bottles are not even dishwasher safe. This includes soda pop containers.

Why take a chance with heavy metal toxic exposure? Aluminum is deadly in the body, and the naturopathic guys all say to avoid anti-perspirant for this reason. Aluminum is a know carcinogen in the body. There are existing stainless steel bottles out there, like the UCan, but that's an expensive storage solution. Think the amber bottles is probably best. I store my plastic mostly bottles in a closed cabinet, and no light gets to them for the most part. Also, the plastic bottles that are used can be checked by looking at the bottoms, checking the number in the triangle and checking that number against the chart:

Plastics by the Numbers | Eartheasy Blog

You can decide for yourself which bottles and plastic you want to use, but if you're worried about it, the glass bottles are very reasonably priced.

If you are Talking about Bare Aluminum then Yeah, I would have a Huge Problem with doing what you mentioned.

Why don't you just use a Amber of Cobalt Blue Glass bottle and keep it out of Direct Light?

BTW - Do you have any Quantitative Numbers as to just how Much and How Fast the Nicotine in a e-Liquid or Nicotine Base breaks down?

70% per Year?

50% per Year?

2% per Year?

All this talk about aluminum being harmful to the body has me worried now....I have recently ordered and am using two aluminum vivi nova tanks (which I am loving). Is this something I should be concerned about? Could the aluminum be harmful? Any thoughts?

As long as the Aluminum is Platted and the Bare Aluminum does not come into contact with your e-Liquids, you shouldn't have any problems.

Do you have a Link to the Aluminum Tanks you bought?

ViVi NOVA 3.5ml V2.5 ALUMINUM TANK

Not sure if I did this right but this is where I bought them.

I would be Cautious of them.

If they are Anodized on the Inside of the Tank, than that is Good and protects the e-Liquid from coming in contact with Bare Aluminum.

But could be Bad if the Anodize ever gets Scratched Exposing the Bare Aluminum. If the Inside is Not Anodized I wouldn't Use them.

Either way, If you want a Metal Tank, I would spend a Few Bucks more and Look for a Stainless Steel Tank.
