SW Ohio
We had hurricane winds come through of all place Ohio a few years back. I had just planted some trees in the front yard and we just had an inground pool put in. The night before it blew through I had put topsoil, seeded, and put straw down all around the pool. The next day it hit. I can remember standing outside as the wind blew in thinking wow something isn't right. I sent the wife and kids to the basement.

Then I watched as all the topsoil straw blew into our new pool. One of the trees I just planted snapped at the base and started twirling in a circle. A few of our pear trees limbs fell.

Our power was out for 5 days. Luckily I had a ton of charcoal. So I did a lot of grilling for us and the neighbors.

Man it was a mess and of all places.. Ohio.

I lived in Florida for five years without getting hit with a hurricane. It really ticked me off to get hit by one after moving back to Ohio! My power was out for four days. Thank goodness for the gas water heater. Hot showers and coffee made from instant and hot tap water helped. I dont' drink instant coffee but keep a jar with my emergency food supply and it paid off.

Well I made it through Sandy and no power outage!! This is a 1st for my immediate area. Usually if the wind is above 30mph, out goes the power for at least a couple days. Not this time! :smokie:

Just the thought of not being able to vape.. Too terrible to contemplate. I'm getting a SI power pack tomorrow for future emergencies. I'm getting too old for such worries!

JoAnn, I have the SI power pack. You won't regret getting it, it's great. I figure with the power pack, the Slider and all the batteries I have I could go pretty long before I'd run out. Now all I need is a solar charger. :)

I'm going to take advantage of SI's Halloween sale to get one... 23% off... Lord I LOVE sales!!

DITTO ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ What "marlou" said . . . :)

I have the SI "Power-Pack" too and it does work on a lot of the "stuff" I have . . . :D

However, I've got to get a "Solar-power-charger" for "My" Electronics . . .

Hopefully - since I know he was working on one - "Kon" will come-up with one that is not too expensive . . . ;)

Sitting down, facing forward.
Hey Uncle, are you gonna be able to get to New Hope?

I thought about a solar charger, the problem is the first word "solar". From my experiences with solar panels, unless they are in full, direct sulight their output drops off to about 25% or less of their rated output. That means if they're in a shadow or not facing the sun they don't put out much power at all. The solution is multiple solar panels, but the the size and cost goes up which make it a little impractical. Solar may work fine in AZ, NV, CA or FL most of the time during the day, but as soon as it gets cloudy, you're ferme. For example, the last three days here have had no real sunlight and it'll probably stay that way until Friday when the storm finally clears out. Relying on solar is an iffy propostion when you consider the practicality of it.

I have been thinking about a charger that uses a 6 or 8 amp hour gel cell for a source, that way youcould have multiple ports, lots of capacity and could charge it from your car in a relatively short time. The best option, in my opinion, is either a generator or an inverter running off a vehicle.

Don't really know - but from what I "Hear" most major roads will be open by the time I leave tomorrow and I will be able to get to and through Manhattan or out via Brooklyn . . . However, given that the Holland Tunnel is flooded and closed - I will have to find an alternate route and either take the Lincoln Tunnel or possibly Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. We'll see tomorrow what's open and what's closed . . . ;)

As for the "solar" power charger - Yea, I hear ya' . . . AND - I already have the inverters and car chargers, etc for all "My" electorincs that run on batteries - just want to make sure I am not without any power source . . . IT'S  and I would be
hair[1].gif
without power (Been There - Done That - Don't "LIKE" IT at ALL) . . . So in the long run - I have no huge expectations other then be able to have another source for power and also be able use it where I "live" in Florida during electrical outages after a hurricane . . . BTW: If I remember correctly, I believe "Kon" was able to do something about collecting power using just a light blub too (I know I read that somewhere) . . . :D

Thank you all for your warm wishes for me and my family and everyone else here in the path of Sandy. Fortunately for myself, my mother, my brother, and his three little children, nothing too bad happened to us. The lights did flicker throughout the night, but we never ended up loosing power, despite our spending $150 on gasoline for the generator (lol now I bet my brother wishes he could cyphen that out and put it in his truck's gas tank, I'm sure) But yeah, thankfully WE did not lose power. Half of our town did, because a tree fell on a power regulator box, but our half of the town was unaffected thank goodness. Idk what I'd do if I had to charge my batteries with power from the generator, I'd be afraid that the generator's kicks out hurt my batteries. (the generator often seems to punch more juice into the lights and appliances every few minutes and that scared me concerning my e-cig batteries) But all was good. Unfortunately, my uncle, who lives next to us, had a big tree limb from a big oak tree fall and crash into his front yard and garden. This was unfortunate and myself and my brother will have to go over there to help out all we can with our chainsaws. Hopefully that will not be too big of a mess for us and hopefully it won't end up costing my uncle much money.

Where you all should really be focusing your warm wishes is NY and the surrounding states and areas. Looking at the national news via CNN I can see that they got it MUCH MUCH worse than we did here in New England. The barrier islands got bashed into with wind and rain. The pictures are as horrifying as they are sad. 2 story houses buried in sand up to their 2nd floor windows. Their car's and trucks and vehicles are buried 6 feet into the sand and perhaps gone forever. NYC's subway stations are halfway filled with sea water, eating away at every piece of metal within. Men and woman are fighting verbally and physically in the streets for the next yellow cab. But don't let that picture make you think for a second that people are not coming together... HUNDREDS of people are huddled in front of a coffee shop right now, using the free wi-fi to check their facebook and e-mails from business associates, family, and friends... Every free wi-fi area is packed to the brim with people and they are all pulling together, and conversation about the disaster.

A moment of silence and thought for the 80 people that lost their lives in NY and the surrounding states. I'm so sorry to hear that. It always made me think of the human race as a fragile ecosystem, similar to a bustling ant colony... A few stray ants still at work outside the colony late at night, get trampled by a young man getting home from his hot date. Y'know, you may not be thinking about the ants under your shoe, but when you think about how WE are that fragile ant colony, you see how fragile and precious life really is. We are not gods and we are not immortal. We are not EVER going to be able to fully defend ourselves from mother nature. Never. So idc if you are christian or muslim, jewish or buddhist, we are all human beings and we will always need to pull together to SUPPORT each other. Always... And that is all encompassing. Government, Society, People, Businesses... We all need to care for one another and ABOUT one another... This isn't some hippy garbage. If we don't realize that all of this technology, gasoline carbon engines, pollution, etc/etc... is RUINING our world, and RUINING us, we are surely going to secure a very scary future for our children.

Many are touting this as a perfect storm... Well guess what people? The Gulf of Mexico is eroding and becoming warmer and warmer every year, and if the Gulf of Mexico weren't as warm as its become this year, this storm wouldn't of been nearly as devastating. That tells you something, doesn't it? And you won't see much about that on the news, you won't hear it at work the following days.. But the fact is there, and its for all of us to think about as its delivered to us. We are polluting the world and we are ruining the world and that is in-turn making the world less comfortable to live in, and it will eventually get to a point where the world will be dangerous for us humans, like the carpenter ants that made their home in the walkway to your front door... We are not listening to the Earth. And ultimately, we ARE the earth.. We need to come together, like the rescuers and the wi-fi seekers in NYC are coming together.

We can't call this storm weak, just because we didn't feel the worst of it where we are living.
We really can't complain about being out of power for a week, only able to charge our laptops/phones/e-cigs once a day... When many elderly woman and men are literally stranded in a home that is burried up to the 2nd floor in sand, and the whole bottom floor is filled with water.. family portraits and photos floating around like little boats... Cars under 5-6 feet of sand on the barrier islands. 80 people (and counting) are pronounced dead today from this storm.

Lets think about the 80+ that lost their lives and never forget that this storm took these lives.

Well, Uncle, yes you can get some ouput from a solar cell with a light bulb, but again 25% is an optomistic amount, besides, if you can light a light bulb you can plug in a charger :)

As far as weather trends are concerned, I take the long view. By that I mean the history of the planet, not the recorded history of man. There was a mini Ice Age in the late 1800's, Niagra Falls froze over, now that's cold. There have been recorded warm periods, at least according to whatever records are available and how believeable they may be, back about 1,000 years ago. The point being that the weather varies and is cyclic in spite of whatever we may think, theorize and postulate about it at the moment.

This current "mega storm" originated in the Atlantic and, while the ocean is still relatively warm, was made into the storm it became by combining with a cold front. Cold fronts regularly come down from Canada around this time of year as the seasons change. The timing was unfortunate for the East Coast. It was an unusual circustance, to be sure, but somehow I think it's not the first time it's happened and certainly won't be the last.

"awsum" . . . Changing the subject of "Solar" power chargers to roads . . .

Can't find out what I need to know, since "My" friend's Electricity is out in New Hope, which also means their phones don't work because they have that STUPID COMCAST Phone service - "DUMB" as far as I am concerned - and no cell phone either . . . Nor can I found out anything on the Internet . . . So have you heard or know anything about Route 202 & 29 from Flemington to Lambertville and anything about "95" ? ? ?

Im not saying everything is related to global warming and I know that global warming is disputed but whether or not we're the cause of the earth warming right now, we still need to be thinking about polluting less and we are. Slowly.

with that said, the main thing i wanted my post to highlight is the 80 men and woman and children that lost their souls to the storm. What can we learn from this? maybe I searched for an answer to that question in the wrong area, but definitely not too deeply. Lets come together and learn from this storm. Lets come together period.

And lets start thinking about November 6th as well. Very important date.

I don't know anything about 95 or 202. Last I heard was the Turnpike was closed north of Exit 10 or 11 because of train cars on the roadway. I have a feeling 29 may be quite a mess, it is in Trenton and is closed there due to some flooding and trees being down. Given the local nature of 29 I would guess trees being down will be a problem all along it. I don't have any direct information, but think that'll pretty much be the case. The other thing is the power being out, no traffic lights, sporadically all over the place. I went from Mount Holly to Trenton on 206 this afternoon and there were only two areas wil power and working traffic signals until I got onto South Broad in Trenton. We have friends in Trenton and they don't have power, so it's anybodys guess going north of there.

Mother nature is a potent force. We humans are insignificant in regard to the time our precious planet has been alive. Anytime someone dies needlessly it is a sad thing and my heart goes out to their loved ones. It is the natural course of our existence.. we live and die.

The one thing though is we generally come together in times of need. When it passed through our neighborhood a few years ago, i spent half the day with ny chainsaw going up and down our streets. The other half was dodging traffic trying to get to work without traffic lights. I swear some people do not know how to drive. My nights where cooking for my family and any thwt wanted to stop buy. I had a sign out and my neighbors would stop by.

I have a jersey girl at work whose family is still in jersey. She has not heard from her mother. So lets hope her mom just forgot to charge her cell.

To those still in ny best wishes. I always think back to 9.11.01 when my dad was in ny an the towers were hit. He was near ground zero and we didn't hear from him for week. Some scary stuff not knowing.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I received word this morning that Imagine is currently stuck without power for the next couple days due to the storm- from what I understand, the area she is in is currently flooded with about 3 feet of water- But she is safe (and hopefully dry!).
So please just let me know if you have any questions over the next few days til she is able to rejoin us here on the forum! :D
