Hi All,

Been vaping for ten days. Haven't had a cigarette all week, so pleased about that.

However, I have a side effect that's bothering me a bit.

It's like a breathless feeling, but not quite. It's not like the breathlessness I got when smoking, i.e. getting worn out from just running up the stairs. In fact, in that respect I feel much "fitter." It's more a feeling of needing to take a really deep breath and not quite being able to take in as much air as I want.

I am asthmatic (not badly) and suffer from anxiety - I think the latter may be the actual cause of this! I've checked my peak flow (lung capacity) and it's fine.

Quite possibly linked to this: I am doing a lot of burping(!) - great big powerful burps sometimes. I think this breathlessness may be linked to that and a big burp sometimes seems to relieve it.

Any thoughts? Is it indigestion? Am I vaping "wrong" and sucking in a load of air? Could it be a symptom of withdrawing from the analogs?

I'm very much aware this could just be pure anxiety. I'm a big hypochondriac (with a doctor phobia, not a great combo). It's not a constant symptom, and doesn't actually seem to happen while I'm vaping, more when I lie and relax.

Vaping using an iStick 20w plus Nautilus Mini, mostly 12mg VG heavy liquids.

All reassurance appreciated, I'm so happy about being cig free that I don't want this inconvenience to scare me back to the analogs.

PS. Having just burped YET AGAIN I think it must be linked somehow!

Interestingly I just saw this on a site about quitting smoking:

"
  • Gasping for breath: The feeling like you can't get enough breath doesn't go away immediately after quitting. You keep trying to take deep breaths, but it feels like you can't get enough air. This will last about a month before you begin breathing normally again. You have been so used to deep breathing with smoke that you need to give yourself a little time to adjust.

Hang in there benny. High VG juices "can" cause a symptom called "heavy lung". You might try reading up on it and decide if any of your symptoms match. Since I have not experienced it (I vape 60pg juices), I cannot say if it's an issue.

There is a keyword activated search box in the upper right above your name and avatar. Almost any vape related term works in it, even possible health issues. It is where I did the search for heavy lung.

It takes some time to get adjusted to your personal vape, relax and read the odds are in your favor since you've made it this long.

First, I always preface anything like this by saying that if you are experiencing adverse health effects, visit a medical professional. Strangers on the Internet can't give completely solid advice on topics like this.

That said, I have never experienced increased burping from vaping, but I have found that some flavoring will make my throat feel constricted, like I can't get enough air (in a different way than smoking). Particularly when I use some fruit flavors. Try several different juices and flavors, see if anything changes.

Good luck on your journey.

I got no reassurance for ya.

I can say if you are vaping very high vg, shortness of breath can result.

And for somebody with asthma, I have to wonder if you compound one issue with another.

There are a few regular members around who have asthma issues, so I hope they have some contribution here.

Theres also possible pg allergy to be wary of.

I suggest you stick to no flavour for a while to at least eliminate that possibility.

I have asthma and when I quit the cigarettes, I belonged to a forum of people that just quit the stinkies and all of us had the hyperventilation problems.. I asked my Dr and he said it was from quiting smoking and the cilla hairs are trying to regrow and the lungs cleaning themselves. It can be rather panic feeling not being able to take a deep breath. but start the breathing exercises.. slowly take deep breaths through your nose and then slowly let out the breath while counting to thirteen like you are blowing out candles. It will eventually go away. It took about six months for mine to completely go away. Ever so often maybe every three or four months I will have that feeling.. Hang in there it will get better. I never took another cigarette after starting vaping and smoked for over 30 years a pack and half a day.
Congrats on vaping and good luck. I have no idea about the burbing. You may be swallowing air when you take a vape.. someone else may be able help with that one...
Nice to meet you..

That was totally me. I'm very active, mountain bike almost daily but when I quite smoking (over a pack a day), I was having shortness of breath. I quite vaping and cigs for a few days and it got worse. But after a few weeks it got better. I had gone to the Dr for something else and she said I was physically fine and it was probably from quitting smoking, and anxiety. 8 months later in 100% better than last year before I quit or tried vaping. I didn't realize how unhealthy I was considering how active I am I figured I was fine but I wasn't. It's like when you quit giving your body the chemicals and it starts to heal, your breathing suffers. I didn't get a bad cough like most people say, no tar or anything coming out, just a slight feeling that I couldn't inhale enough. I can see how anxiety can really affect people because when you quit your emotions are all over the place. It's your body creating a symptom to make you go back to the chemicals it's so used to. I mean I smoked for 10 years 20 or 30 cigarettes loaded with crap so it makes sense. I and have a slight anxiety disorder so that also factors into it.

Thanks, reading some threads now.

I'm almost positive it's related to the burping! Any experience of that from anyone?

no burping but certain flavor(ings) gave me reflux and still do. And once it starts, it pretty much ruins my whole day cuz it doesn't go away right quick.

You might try vaping some unflavored 50/50 ..... it tastes a little like marlboro lights.

Somebody who has asthma, you don't want to be adding something that your lungs get irritated from. That is quite often, flavorings in certain ejuices.

Try and see what happens.

For me, peach and apple are offenders. Also, anything with even a hint of cinnamon.
