I just got my Buzz this afternoon, and I'm noticing a strange smell coming from the area around the voltage dial. I'm not sure how to describe it beyond strange. I'm using brand new AW 3.7V 750mAh protected CR123a's.

I'm almost afraid to keep using it at this point. Is this something with the Buzz? Are my batteries venting? Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven't put noalox on. It's not a burning electronics smell. The only other place I can think I've smelled something similar is in an auto mechanic's garage. It's a chemically smell.

A bit closer inspection shows the smell is strongest in the battery compartment. I'm suspecting the batteries at this point.

That is what I am thinking also from your description. can you replace the ones you are using?

Yeah, I'm going to go back to my Chuck for now, let the buzz sit so the smell can clear and try another pair later.

Edit: Wanted to add the body is not getting hot. The atty is not getting excessively hot, and I'm using a standard 510, not an LR.

My chuck has the same smell inside the battery compartment. It's just stuff they put on the threads to make it screw in a lot easier, so the threads don't catch and grind. try wiping inside the compartment to see if a really dark greasy substance comes out... if so, that's just the lubricant. It has a pretty strong "electrical" strange smell.

I think Xanax hit the nail on the head. It might not be Noalox. I've never used it to know what it smells like or if it has a smell, but there is some lubricant on the threads. I scraped some out of the threads and smeared it onto a piece of paper. It has the same smell. That would also jive with the "auto mechanic's garage" smell since I've been in more than one that has a strong smell of lubricant.

To be clear it's not like I smell this only when I'm actively pressing the button. It's a lingering smell. It doesn't interfere with vapor taste or function - which is freaking awesome, by the way.

Edit: Well there we go. Posting at the same time, ftw. Yeah, I definitely got my sense of smell back. I almost puked from the exhaust fumes sitting in LA traffic last weekend. :)

I will send my engine assembly lube ( moly graphite ) to work for them to use, it has almost NO smell ! .

I happen to like that smell but I raced cars for 12 years so ??

We used to use the Engine lube then at the shop they had our normal bearing grease we have used for years making machines , Never thought about the smell .

They both work great for keeping the threads smooth and working for a long time , BTW we made the caps brass on purpose , dissimilar metals will not gall !! and if you keep a small amount of lube on them they will last many years .

good to know that.

keep up the good work, im sure your buzz will be number one in mods, because lets face it we all use the buzz more than our other mods and the fact of being able to tune it to different juices is freaking awesome.
