So I got my kanthal wire 32 guage and 3mm silica wick.

Tried three attempts.

I'm finding it hard to do the wrapping around the silica. It's very fiddly.

I think I keep shorting. It's either too close to the sides or touching.

Any suggestions?

I read about people using drill bits? I'm trying to recoil a single coil kanger, protank, evod thingy.

thanks.

I've never built with silica, but maybe make sure to pre-torch the wire, wrap on a drill bit, torch again, then tighten by putting it back on the drill bit and pulling both legs at the same time. Also, maybe use smaller diameter silica/ekowool?

Hello thank you.

How do you wrap on a drill bit? Do you wrap it with the silica as well. Like hold it on a drill bit?

Sorry to sound thick. Or do you mean wrap the wire then thread the silica through it??

I have just followed a video and used my lighter on the wire. Three attempts, but not getting very far. I did get some vapor, flavour...but flavour wasn't nice. Must have done something wrong.

The best way to recoil Kanger heads is doing a micro coil and using cotton for wicking. The are lots of youtube videos explaining. It's not too hard once you get the hang of it.

Yes it looks quite easy. Could I do the same, but with silica wick as I've just ordered silica and wire. Will the silica fit through the coil? Like they do with cotton, but instead do it with silica?

I believe it is a bit fiddly to thread the silica through the coil. If you are going to wrap the coil around the silica use a small needle and wrap the coil around the silica and needle together, this makes it a bit more rigid and easier to wrap.

Again plenty of you tube vids showing how to do this.

Okay thank you will give it a go tomorrow.

I suppose you just use the needle as a guide.

I've had no luck getting silica through a micro coil. I bought some too when I first started but quickly figured cotton was the way to go. I got a bag of organic cotton at the drug store that will last for years for about $3. Still have the silica virtually untouched.

Ummm.... I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this. With a protank single coil, you don't wrap the wick first. You wrap the coil, get it positioned in the base with the insulator and bottom post and everything. Then you check to make sure it's reading an adequate resistance.

The final step is wicking it, which you do afterwards. You thread it through the coil while it's in the base. When you get it tight enough through the coil, you snip off the excess ends.

I've never used silica, so I'm not sure how easy it is to work with. I've used a mini screwdriver since the beginning. One time i tried a drill bit since so many people use them, but I found it extremely difficult because the drill bit is just straight, and there's no "handle" I guess you could call it to press the coil against.

It did take me an hour or two to finally get one working, but now it only take me 5 minutes to completely rebuild a coil with rayon. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. With the rayon I can easily twist and resize as necessary.

What you say is true unless using silica. Almost inpossible to get enough silica through a micro coil after it is wound.

Yes, and wrapping fluffy cotton with a coil is darn near impossible as well. I actually tried once when I didn't know what I was doing. It's laughable the way it came out.

I can see why people use silica, as it probably lasts the longest out of all the materials, but it's pretty poor at everything else.

Depends what cotton you use, Mujo or KGD japanese cotton is so easy to put in a 1.5mm micro coil.

I find 3 mm silica a tad big for Kangers, and use 2 mm for them. (Rayon for everything else :) ) Then top with either cotton or rayon flavor wick.

Like the fact that I can clean and dry burn the silica a few times before needing to rewind...

And while a sewing needle is fine, I find I often wind up with the sharp end in a finger tip, so use a straightened out paper clip instead. Same principle, but blunt!
