CTV.ca | Nicotine levels in cars adds support for ban: study

"We're interested in what the second-hand smoke exposure might do to a non-smoker travelling in a car with a smoker," said senior author Dr. Patrick Breysse.

So they're studying harmful second hand smoke in cars...

"And we found that for each cigarette smoked in the car, there was about a doubling in the airborne nicotine concentration," said Breysse

...no wait, they're studying airborne nicotine.

Dr. Peter Selby, clinical director of the addictions program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, said the research confirms what other studies have shown, that there is significant exposure to second-hand smoke in confined spaces

...so what they're REALLY studying is second hand smoke but using nicotine as the focus. They needed to study this? That there is significant exposure to second hand smoke in confined spaces? I'm sure they got government funding for this too! Vapers already figured out that we weren't the only ones inhaling all that garbage. The people around us were too. Why do you think that PV's have caught on?

So, if you don't read the whole aritcle (and most people don't...they skim the through it) , you'll be left with the impression that it's nicotine that kills you and not the thousand of toxic chemicals in traditional cigarettes.

Certainly an interesting spin to put on a study.

I am just so tired of hearing all the rubbish about the dangers of second hand smoke. It's all become way beyond sensible. Why can't these people find far more useful things to be doing with their time, the irritating thing is those very same people will happily drive around in their cars spouting out incredibly deadlier toxins....but why worry...they can pick on smokers.
I once worked in a huge engineering factory....the air was so thick with black gungy oil that every surface and every extractor fan would be thick with it, yet they banned smoking and didn't worry about us breathing that stuff in all day. The world is so full of this nonsense. It's as if people just don't have enough important things to concentrate on any more so they spend all their time on petty rubbish.

I call testing focus and procedure shenanigans!!!!

How much you want to bet that testing was done with no ac running, not heater fan running and no windows cracked open.

Now, how many do you know have, or have done so yourself, smoked in a confined space with zero air movement. I know "I" wouldn't even be able to tolerate it, and that from a 2-3 pack a day'r.

Subjective testing...... subjective results....... all to compliment the desired end results of the tester.

Common sense is lost completely on sheep !!

"Among the smokers, 53 per cent said that being unable to smoke in the car would help them to kick the habit and 93 per cent said vehicles should be smoke-free on a voluntary basis. Only seven per cent said vehicles should be smoke-free by legislation."

Wait... 7% of smokers believe vehicles should be smoke free by legislation?

Ummm... what?

Agree wholeheartedly. Heck, here in the U.S., when they took the lead out of gasoline they replaced it with Benzene, which causes leukemia. Yeah, that's sooo much better than lead *rolls eyes*. And the volume of toxins from an entire pack of cigs pales in comparison to the volume of crap spewed out by gasoline cars here.

yep. I always crack the window, rolling it down further when traveling slower, and often open the sunroof, even in the winter. As any statistics instructor will say, you can prove anything with statistics, it's all in what data set you choose to use and how you spin it.

Statistically speaking, 64% of all statistics are made up.

I read that article as well on CTV news webpage and the part I found most interesting is that smoker's vehicles contain twice as much nicotine as non-smoker's vehicles.

Really? Never would have guessed that if you hadn't spent my tax dollars to figure that out. Actually it is surprising in some regards, if it is a non-smoker's car, where is the nicotine coming from to measure that a smoker's car has twice as much?
