The FDA commissioned a study of the effects of the various proposed graphic warning images. To view the text of the study, click the PDF icon next to the word "Views".

Regulations.gov

To assess the impact on cessation, we used a measure of intentions to quit: “How likely do
you think it is that you will try to quit in the next month?” We do not find strong evidence
that the warning labels tested in this experiment had much of an impact on this measure of
cessation.

Make the packs black, with a skull and cross bones and we will just use it more. To quote my favorite comedian of all time.

I am seriously beginning think my father was right all along, The government isn't elected by you they don't cxare about you, but they damn sure want you to think that they are and do, how else will they get paid.

I think the "Antis" are slipping a bit. Why don't they, in addition to graphic labeling on packs of cigarettes, go after the disposable lighter industry, Bic, Ronson, etc. and make them put graphic labeling on their products as well, or maybe force them to place a microchip in each lighter that when it is lit shouts at the user..." hey stupid, I hope you're not lighting a cigarette, that'll kill you ya know". How about "mandated" graphic labeling on all ashtrays sold - maybe the skull and crossbones etched in the bottom. Graphic labeling on all packs of matches (they can move the 1-800 number to the inside of the pack-you know, the number you call to get your Doctors degree-where obviously Prue T. and so many other "so-called researchers" got theirs.)

I like your expansion of graphic image placement on peripheral objects like lighters and ashtrays, D103. Just remember, these mandates must be limited to SMOKING related items only and must never leak into other consumer goods, regardless of their harm to the user. It's important that smokers always remember their pariah status.

The new images on cigarettes packages screams that the government's only power over tobacco is to intimidate and humiliate those who "legally" smoke cigarettes. Oh, by the way...I'm not one of those "Reformed Smokers" that every one of us used to avoid when we smoked. If it wasn't for E-cigarettes...people would still be telling me, "Your nothing but a smoker"...Food for thought.

I'm sure adding such images on lighters and ashtrays is being considered.

This new mandate is so ridiculous it borders on insulting. It's just a dog and pony show designed to make it look like the government is sticking it to the tobacco industry, but both parties know good and well there is no info on these packs that smokers haven't seen a million times before and simply don't care or can't quit for whatever reason. Big tobacco complies because the only money they lose is on the cost of creating the new labels......they know they won't lose customers over it, wink wink.

It's "Show Time"

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced new, evidence-based tobacco control initiatives to make health warnings on packages and in advertising larger and more prominent. Watch the announcement by Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of HHS, Howard K. Koh, M.D., MPH, Assistant Secretary of HHS and Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., FDA Commissioner.

Side note: I sincerely hope that people know I was being totally sarcastic in post #4 - I would no sooner approve of this ridiculous "labeling" scheme than I would the already ridiculous "graphic labeling" they are currently promoting. It is appalling to consider that there are people getting paid (probably considerable salaries) to come up with such ludicrous and "over-the-top" ideas.

50% of Americans are mentally ill

Kathleen Sebelius's closing remarks (46:30): "Half our deaths are supposed to have some kind of mental illness or serious mental illness"

She was talking about segments of the population that needs to be addressed.

She didn't say half of those who smoke are mentally ill.

She said half of those who die in America have a mental illness. Isn't that just another way of saying 50% of Americans have a mental illness?

Your thoughts?
