I'm not sure I understand the question.

If you're using a standard kanthal coil the chip won't attempt to regulate temperature. It'll just fire at whatever wattage you have it set to, just like any other VW mod. If you connect a TC capable coil, such as SS, nickel, or titanium and set the material on the mod to match then it will run in TC.

The interface is different than most other chipsets so it can be a bit confusing at first.

Yea that's why I started with stupid question...Lol.
Let me try again.
I am using stainless steel coils. I have my DNA set for wattage mode. I click the lock button 5 times. It locks. I hold both + and -. It mentions changing a temp setting. I thought temp settings were irrelevant in wattage mode. I guess the setting being there and allowing me to change it from off to a value is confusing me.

The profile you're using might be set to default to temp control if it detects a temp control coil. If your profiles are straight out of the box (no editing by you, yet) change to profile 5. That will lock in watts regardless of the metal the coil is made of. The default name for profile 5 is Power ctrl.

Ah, ok. That feature is just for convenient switching to/from TC on any preset. If your device doesn't have a power only preset you can make one in escribe. I usually make a few presets with various preheat settings and make them temperature dominant so that the temp is displayed on the main screen rather than wattage, and then make a power only profile for VW.

Once you get the hang of escribe you'll find that you can do all sorts of neat things to make life more convenient.
