Stupid question: is a mechanical mod one that has no soldered wires ?.....

Like the subject states is that correct ? And a wooden box mod that does have soldered wires and only uses let's say an 18650 battery to fire roughly 3.7 volts would not be a mechanical mod right ?

A mech mod is a closed circuit with no chips or gauges. The current from the battery feeds the resistance directly then goes back to the battery.

No, a mechanical mod is any mod that works on a mechanical circuit rather than an electronic computer chip. A box mod that uses wires is still a mechanical mod, provided it's not using an electronic chip to regulate the power.


If using a wire meant that it wasn't a mechanical mod then there would be no such thing as a mechanical mod. After all, no mod works until it makes a complete circuit, and in order to make a complete circuit you run the current through an atomizer, which uses a wire coil.

The resistance is part of the circuit. The only variable is the switch, which closes the circuit.

Ya, there is some disagreement about this. IMO, the ultimate form of a mechanical mod is one without any chips, circuit boards or wires in it.

OTOH, a good argument can be made that any mod without power regulation in it is mechanical including the ones that use mosfets.

In the end it really doesn't matter to me. Vape what you're comfortable with and call it what you will

I fail to see how it makes sense to call a mod with an electronic switch a "mech". Unregulated? Sure. Mechanical? No!

Words are abused every day and that's a good thing in my opinion. I feel this process leads to changes that help keep a language alive and relevant as societies change. If language never changed we would be speaking a much different form of English than we are now, or maybe a completely different language. Works for me but as with so many things, YMMV

So most of you are in agreement for the most part with my original statement except "completely average"?
Was curious cause I hve had a few mods that I have used that don't have a chip but do have soldered wires and have always had issues with them breaking.
The mods I have that have no wiring last forever - nothing to break. Using one now for 5 years.

This is true, though some of those 'unregulated box mods' have true mechanical switches. That is, a piece of metal that is manually pushed to complete a circuit. Anyway most vendors will point out minor definition differences in the description of the item. I've seen 'hybrid' and 'semi-mechanical' used as terms to describe those mods that fall in between.

AFAIK, a mod with soldered wires but no electronic circuitry to regulate the output voltage is known as a semi-mechanical mod.

I have never understood how the presence of wires makes a mod non-mechanical. Electrically, they are, for all practical purposes, indistinguishable from copper tubes. I guess I'll just have to accept that the nomenclature is the nomenclature.

A "Mechanical Only Device" would suggest that the only electrical component contained within it is the battery. Everything else is mechanical.
