Way to go Chuck!
I usually look at the diameter of the coil and cut a strip that's just as wide as the diameter. Then GENTLY roll it and put a bit of a point on one end to help with threading. You want it to be able to slide through the coil without bunching up anywhere or without needing a whole lot of tension to get it through. If it's too narrow, that doesn't work either - you'll get hot spots and a burning taste {ask me how I know...
