Except that the OP is playing with the vertical, "chimney" coil. No wick inside the coil at all.

My bad, guess I skimmed over that part :p

I usually cotton cloud my builds and get amazing flavor, but I still have a center wick. I'm aware of chimney coils but see no particular need to try one. Maybe if I ever get around to using Protanks again. That's a big maybe!

Awesome, thank you. I am going to try that coil right now. Sounds exactly what I am looking for. Kudos!

Question, when you are laying your cotton cloud, do you simply fill in the open area, or pack it down with a lot of cotton?

I use those round toothpicks to wrap my coils.. 7-8 wraps gets me approx 1.3 Ohms.. fire it up on and compress it before it cools (make sure your not pressing the button when you compress it with the tweezers.. repeat 2-3 times until its compressed.. and if there is still residue, fire it up in bursts until its burned off..for cotton I use facial pads.. cut to 1/2 centimeter strip and peel that in half.. I find I get a consistent amount of cotton each time

I just built a .8 micro coil in my kayfun works great on my provari. First coil was .7 and it wouldn't fire only while checking ohms would it fire the coil. The taste is so much better with these lower ohm coils.

Wow. I have 4 Provaris that Ive tried many ohm configurations with in my kayfuns. None of mine will fire at 1.0 but will fire at 1.1

do you HAVE to blowtorch your coils? I see a lot of youtube vids recommending this.

A lighter will do just fine. Just get the wire red hot and move on slowly back and forth. I do this 4 times and then wrap around my drill bit, then squeeze the coils tightly together. The I slide the coil out of the bit, heat again red hot, then quickly grab my needle nose pliers and squeeze the coil again to try to get the coils to all touch evenly. I might do this a couple of times. The I put the bit back in the coil (great for handling the already built coil with your thumbs and finger so it wont get bent out of shape).....Then place the coil on that little ledge below the air hole and center it up with the air hole.....and keep a tight thumb on it so it wont move.......then wrap the two legs to the loosened screw posts ALMOST 1 turn....then tighten. But dont tighten too hard. Just enough so they wont let the wire loose (dont want to strip these small screws) Then pull the coil up over the air hole....position...then remove the drill bit when completed.

Wallah !!! Instant perfect micro coil everytime !!

PS.. You can use whatever size you prefer.... but I like a 5/64 drill bit.......wrap with 28 Kanthal 7 times...this will give you a 1.1 ohm coil every time. Then slide your cotton in there ( that another lesson on a Kayfun) and your done for a couple months with the exception of the occasional changing of the cotton wick.

I did that in the beginning.. but now I just burn off the residue by firing it on the mod.. after you wrap the coil compress it. it will spring back.. after you fire it up and compress again it will stay compressed.. the heat will remove the "springiness"..

forgot to mention im using 28awg

I actually like firing the coil on my nemesis and then using tweezers on it. I think I might goto hobby lobby and pick up some new tweezers though, some thinner ones specifically for coils.
And I use a tiny bernzomatic mini torch. I need to get a different one though, as it's not self igniting and can be a pain at times.

Thanks for all the info! Local B&M is expecting another shipment of the KFL+ this week and I cant wait. I may just grab two because im a horder like that.

So, when it comes to changing wick/flavors-- Ive seen various threads on how long they last. Thunderball, how long do you let one wick sit before replacing it? Do you keep 1 flavor in the tank at all times, and if not, do you rewick when changing flavors?

The wick will start to gunk up sort of like when you know a carto is going bad. You can change wicks for every flavor, or every tank even, but you don't have to. I just switched from a cherry pipe tobacco to a chocolate mocha & the transition was rather enjoyable. It depends on the juice on how often you need to rewick. Carto cloggers might last 1-4 tanks (or maybe even more). Lighter flavors, I have no idea because I tend to change the wick long before I need to on those... just because I can.

No. You can just turn it red a few times before putting the wick in and it's the same thing. If you're making micro coils, you just turn it red, and pinch the coils together immediately after the red stops, and it will stick em together too. Torching just makes them less bouncy while you're trying to wrap them (which is helpful sometimes)

Also as Thunderball said, I've used lighters too... but that works best on 32 ga or maybe 30 ga.

On 28 ga, it just carbonizes it black and makes it look bad unless you keep it lit long enough to burn your fingers with the lighter, takes a lot longer to turn a 28ga red with a lighter.

Well, well, well. I tried the Bapgood's setup. Finally! I am getting a decent, quality vape. The sweet flavor isn't ground breaking, but I am going to give it a try while watching Dallas Buyers Club and see how it goes.
A big thank you for the help!

so you managed to get rid of the funky taste?! nice one!! ..maybe I can still have some hope too??!

which one did you end up using? yarn? cotton balls? boiled?

this week I'll be doing more testing with cotton, would love to hear more details from you :)

was wondering if you could tell me how long would you say it should take to properly prime that build before first use? thanks!

I used cotton this time, but the big change was twofold. First, I used minimal wick, only having enough to get down to the juice deck. Second, I used a cotton cloud.
My coil was placed directly on the base, per instruction, rather than elevated as Rip Trippers did. Oh, and it's a 1.5 ohm coil.

I haven't tried boiled yarn again, but the boiled cotton seems to be working fantastic.

You might be surprised. IMO, There is quite an improvement in flavor over the standard micro/cotton setup. It can be a bit more finicky to get the right amount of cotton, though.

I just press it lightly down into the chamber, filling it up to the bottom of the threads. No real packing at all. In the end, there is no metal or screws visible on the deck, but plenty of room for the air to flow up through the coil.

I get it pretty wet before adding the chamber piece. After adding the chamber and filling with cotton, I wet it again pretty thoroughly. By now, it's wet enough to give some pretty cloudy test fires. I can vape right after filling the tank. I sometimes leave it for a minute just to be certain - and with Boba's thick juice I may give a dry pull just to be certain that air bubble releases from the bottom of the tank. With my 70/30 juices, I never wait. Just fill & vape.

I do get a cotton flavor after replacing the wick. But it usually disappears somewhere within 4-10 vapes.
