Hi everyone,

I quit smoking about eight months ago and have been vaping ever since with no discernable side-effects at all. About six weeks ago I contracted what I thought was a cold, manifesting in a low-level cough, but then it just went on and on. Eventually, I decided to stop using the e-cig for a while to see what happens and my symptoms seemed to fade away. After a couple of days, I felt normal again. When I start vaping again, back comes the sore-chest/throat and cough. I've tried this a few times and the symptoms are definitely triggered by the e-cig. I'm pretty concerned and more than a little disappointed - my delicious Liberro Turkish Blend is just sitting there looking at me and I can't use it without getting ill.I don't want to stop vaping and I don't particularly want to contribute to the besmirching of e-cigarettes' reputation but if they're not safe, they're not safe.

I should add that these symptoms began to occur shortly after trying a clearomizer and new juice from a new vendor. However, I've returned to the stuff I used to use which is now manifesting as toxic as well. Funnily enough, different juices affect me in slightly different ways and at slightly different speeds. Some will give me a sensation of swelling in my lower throat pretty much right away while some, my Turkish Blend for instance, seemed fine the first day I used it (yesterday) and then woke me up in the night with an awful burning cough in my chest, the soreness of which I can still feel.

Thoughts? Has anyone else had this experience?

Not a professional in any way but I would consider maybe an allergic reaction to the juice. A lot of new vapers discover they are allergic to the PG that is used in the majority of juices. Have you tried using a VG only juice? It may help. Tons of reading material about PG allergy on the forum. Just do a search if you want to read more.

I'm not a new vaper. This is the first time in eight months I've had any trouble.

i want to clarify that a possible allergic reaction doesn't mean they aren't safe...peanuts are "safe" for most, deadly to others

new juice/new clearo would be my first step in "troubleshooting" as that appears to be the change/beginning of the issue...

Yes, that's true, if it is an allergic reaction. I'm going to see a doctor tomorrow morning. I've taken an antihistamine, which has made me feel very drousy but doesn't seem to have dealt with the the inflammation in my chest...

I've tried a number of different juices and carts/clearos from different suppliers and all are affecting me, albeit in slightly different ways.

I've read of some vapers developing a PG allergy months after starting ecigs. Could be the VG also, but PG more likely. I would get a bottle of 100%PG and a bottle of 100%VG and see what happens with each of them to rule out glycol/glycerin allergy.

I also had a similar experience with horrible throat irritation and coughing and it turned out to be a particular clearomizer I was using... don't ask me how or why, but as soon as I tossed that clearo for a new one (even with the same juice) all of those problems went away overnight.

Don't give up yet

i keep thinking that maybe the other juices/delivery system is irritating the original reaction?

infections can linger on forever without symptoms...maybe an infection that vaping pokes at and presents symptoms?

i hope you get it figured out!

I've been vaping for about three months now...

After about a month and a half, I began experiencing excruciating cramps, bloating and digestive troubles. After some experimenting, I found that PG in ANY amount triggered my IBS/spastic colon syndrome but it did take a month and a half before it "kicked in". Now, I only do DIY 100% VG/organic flavored e-juices with no problems at all, which I store all e-juices and flavorings in glass bottles. Here's my :2c: worth; I myself am SCARED TO DEATH of plastic carto-tanks in any shape or form having heard of the problems some juices can cause with them, though many folks use them without apparent problems. I'm a firm believer that the plastic leaches out into the juice whether or not the tank gets cloudy, etched, cracked or the like....maybe in just smaller amounts with "non corrosive" juices. Ever taste water after it's sat in a plastic bottle for a few days? Add ANY amount of heat whatsoever and the plastic leaches more. And that's about as pure as it gets regarding liquid/plastic contact in any form.

It is refreshing to see that many Ecig/tank manufacturers are beginning to steer towards affordable glass tanks. :toast: IMO, if there's anything that the Big Tobacco/FDA cabal could use against our wonderful vaping experience...it is the plastic tank and it's leaching problems. Although cigarettes now contain vinyl acetate in the "speedbumps" aka FSC "fire safe" cigs.. At any rate, I'd suggest doing some experimenting like I did. I hope you feel better! :)

Thanks everyone, for your replies. I've just been to see a doctor and he was as about as useless as I expected, i.e, completely. Basically didn't ask me any questions, shoved a prescription for antibiotics in my hand and gave me a number to call to book a chest x-ray. I think I'm just going to book another appointment next week and ask for different doctor (my girlfriend has now recommended me one that actually makes eye-contact and listens, rather than trying to usher you out as soon as possible). Didn't vape yesterday. Chest hurt all day. Better today, as expected, but tonsils are quite sore. This is a recurring pattern: Day I use the e-cig: sensation of swelling and irritation in upper chest/lower throat. In the night I'll wake up coughing with a burning chest irritation. Day two there'll be residual chest soreness and day 3, just a sore throat around my tonsils.

Today, I've got a whole new kind of sore throat. Y'know how paper sounds as it's ripped? That's how my throat feels every time I swallow. I've gone for those antibiotics anyway. I also took an antihistamine but that didn't seem to do much. I've ordered a sample of Virgin Vapour to see how I respond to 100% VG. I don't think it's a pg allergy though - since PG is in so much stuff, you'd think it would have manifested in other ways. This is localised to the areas of my body that have been directly exposed to the liquid, i.e respiratory system. I haven't even reacted to touching the fluid though. On the other hand, what else could be common to all the different liquids I've tried from different vendors, that would suddenly become reactive? Not much. That's why the best theory I've got at the moment is that there's an underlying problem that is asymptomatic until aggravated by vapour.

Somewhere out there
I would suggest going to a carto and try vaping zero nic VG and PG and different %'s of each. This way you will know if it is the base or the flavor added. I cannot handle high VG for example, makes me sick to stomach and gives me such a heavy chest feeling it is painful and I also have some allergy to fresh mixed Capella's flavorings. I have no trouble with high PG 80/20 or 70/30, and other flavors like Flavor West, TPA, Flavour Art, etc. Just need to pinpoint what the allergy is too. Good luck! bnrk

I wouldn't vape while you are trying to sort out what's going on.

Conclusions you come up with now may be erroneous since your respiratory and/or upper airway is compromised and anything you do may aggravate it.

That burning in your chest after coughing is probably inflammation; bronchitis...?

Just my 2 cents...hope you get it sorted out.

Your new doctor will most likely order a chest x-ray also, so it may be a good idea to get the one your first doctor prescribed. That way you'll be way ahead and won't waste time.

If you want to experiment in the meantime, just get a bottle of vegetable glycerin (vg) from a pharmacy near you and mix it 85% glycerin and 15% distilled water. It will be 0 nic but at least you'll be able to determine if the vg is the culprit without having to wait for an order through the mail.

If that also gives you problems, then I would lay off the vaping until you get a diagnosis from the new doctor. Do you have the same symptoms if you smoke regular cigarettes? If you do, then maybe it's something totally separate from vaping.

Good luck and I hope you find what is affecting your respiratory system.

I agree with previous post to consult with your doctor on this one. I started vaping 3 1/2 weeks ago. I started with a pg/vg blend at 18 nic and I felt chest heaviness and didn't like the feeling. I found Virgin Vapors and decided I wanted to try pharmaceutical grade 100% VG and lower nicotine to 12. After trying lots of their flavors... I have now choses two. Kona Coffee milkshake and Amaretto. I have not had the chest heaviness. But saying all this... I would continue to look for answers through your doctor and continue to research this. I am also using the Kanger pyrex protank for my juices...

Please make sure any Vegetable glycerin is pharmaceutical grade as used in inhalers. Food grade is for ingesting not for inhaling.

Virgin Vapors is REALLY good stuff! They're the first one's I tried when first figuring out my PG sensitivity problems. I've never had any health problems from their e-juices. High quality and top notch service. Annette will even custom blend any thing you ask for....:)
