So I recently started building my own coils, normally I have the vape shop do it, but they charge way to much for it, and when they make my coils its a nice smooth vape, but now I made the same build as they normally make for me, and it's crackly and spitty. What am I doing wrong? I make a 24 Guage 7 wrap and normally clocks around .25 to .03 ohms any help would be appreciated thank you!

I have currently been looking into this very phenomenon and I may have found an answer (at least for myself)....... If someone else has more knowledge and input then that would be terrific.......... I am thinking that it is how the coils are wrapped. Please keep in mind that I do not know this to be fact but in a few experiments I have been doing then this seems to be the case...... What I have found is that if each wrap of the coil is butted right up next to wraps next to it then the popping/crackling either goes away completely or it is greatly reduced.

When I intentionally created spaces between each coil wrap, then the crackling and popping started...... The coils functioned just fine in both flavor and vapor while popping but it isn't something i really like because it often spits hot ejuice up into my mouth. I have read on here where lots of folks do not mind the sound at all as it doesn't seem to adversely effect the vapor. But, personally, I do not like lots of popping and spurting. I have produced lots of builds that were silent, produced good vapor, and never made a sound but yet other builds popped like crazy. So, I decided to look into it to see what the cause was.

I dont know if it's the same for RBA's to tanks but when a tank crackles, it means it's leaking and has too much juice in the wick. I recommend re-wicking and using less juice per each drip, see if that works [emoji5]️

Not exactly the same ............ Yes, wicking can cause issues such as these but that probably isn't what the op is having problems with because he stated that it works great for him and with no crackling sound whenever he gets it rebuilt by a vape shop. This would indicate that they are doing something slightly different from how he is doing it. Also, I doubt that he would use e juice or wicking any differently than he did in the past when he had his coils rebuilt by the vape shop. I don't think that just because he started building his own coils that he also changed how he uses ejuice or wicking.

I have rebuilt lots of tank atomizers, rba's, rda's and the like and I even experience this from time to time myself. Like I say, I think it has to with how tightly packed the wraps on a coil are. Wouldn't hurt to use thicker VG juices either......... But I can pretty much eliminate all popping sound on my RDA by removing all space between the coil windings.

When I first started wrapping coils I found if the wick was too loose it would crackle and spit alot.

^^^ Agree .... Yes, this is another factor........ I don't think there is any one "specific" factor as several things can cause it......... I have noticed that using thicker ejuice (higher vg) help lots as well as a fairly snug wick....... But there are those times where I still get spitting and I have discovered that the coil wrap spacing also contributes to it as well.

Not having ceramic tweezers shouldn't be the sole cause of this problem, no. I only use my ceramic tweezers some of the time and haven't noticed any correlation between not using them and having a crackly vape. It may require more effort but it's not impossible to build a nice, effective, well-working coil without ceramic tweezers. They just sometimes make the job a bit easier.

Could be a wicking issue or too much juice, too... a photo of your build would probably help.

Oh also since I don't have ceramic tipped teasers I can't scrunch them down while there glowing only when I let go of the firing button could this be an issue maybie?

I've never used ceramic tweezers but you've reminded me I need to get some. The bigger coil ID will take longer to heat up and cool down, I do find 3mm coils fizzle more.

Have you tryed strumming your coils?, basically its running a screwdriver over them like harp strings.

Ceramic tweezers, what are they? (jk) ... Never used them.......... I got a bunch of nice kuro jigs and I don't even use those... I usually just use a drill bit like lots of folks do. I usually squeeze together the coil windings by first heating the coils with the mod battery and I squeeze them together as the coil is cooling. I keep repeating this procedure until I get most of the space out from between the windings. This seems to work the best for me. I have tried it other ways as well. I have got the coils all nice and tidy before I install them but I usually mess them up or mangle them while I am installing them. So, I usually find it simpler and faster to do it how I just described.

Also @DiscoRanger make sure your post screws are tight because if they are loose it will cause the ohms to read wrong and the coil will fire too hot which will cause spit-back.

^^^ Yep, that is another one of the many factors that cause spitting.......The screws expand/contract a tiny amount from the heating a cooling process. This causes the screws to become loose....... I check mine frequently.

I find crackling and spitting (in drippers) is often related to the HEIGHT of the coil off the deck, and to the wicking. Just so you don't solely focus on the coil itself, which might be fine - try lifting or lowering a little and see what effect that has. Also try a little less or more wick...
I LIKE a little sizzle - but I don't want boiling juice shooting out. It hurts. LOL

Yes I wick it the same and no spaces in my coils, I dunno I am using a slightly bigger drill bit then there using but I don't see how this would be a problem, I dunno I'll just keep practicing and see if it stops haha thank you guys for the input:) they do glow evenly as well
