Anyone got a build that is low ohm and has decent surface area? I have 28g Kanthal but would this be more easily achieved with something lower?

most common way to get high surface area and low ohms is multiple coils. duals, quads... that's what they're for

You can also try the ribbon kanthal. I use the 0.8 mm ribbon all the time and it works great.

You can twist the 28g on a drill that will lower the resistance and create more surface area.

Try twisting 32g into four strand which will give a quad braid, they work really well and the flavor is amazing.
Try a parallel. You wrap two strands side by side and it acts as a dual coil only on one side basically.
Well I'm currently running a dual coil 3/4 wrap w/ 28g Kanthal. It vapes really nice and I get a decent cloud but I feel I could do better.
Twisting wire is a great way to get surface area and drop the ohms down, I'm running a single coil right now that is four strands of 26ga twisted tightly then wrapped 6 times over a 2mm dowel, came in a .22 ohms and if you account for each strand of 26ga wire there is over a foot of length in this single coil! Fantastic density and flavor.
twisted and braided are different, twisted is almost round and braided is.. well.. flat
for me braided is better flavour and clouds
No this is just the basic knuckle coil. The moose knuckle is when to bend the coil so it traps cotton between the post and coils. This did not have that spongy taste.

How was the braid done? Just tried twisting today and liked it, want to experement more!!!
heres a video I found on youtube... just do the same but if you want you can trap the 3wires one end in a clamp or forceps

once you get practice you can get it fairly tight but to get it really tight just run your fingers down the braid while squeezing tightly with your hands.. maybe you can use a cloth to protect your fingers
even vaping on a braided wire like the middle pic is really good
while doing a search for a braid vid I see other vids on how to braid 8 lengths around a core... could be useful
