Think the occasional cigarette won't hurt? Even a bit of social smoking — or inhaling someone else's secondhand smoke — could be enough to block your arteries and trigger a heart attack, says the newest surgeon general's report on the killer the nation just can't kick.

Lung cancer is what people usually fear from smoking, and yes, that can take years to strike. But Thursday's report says there's no doubt that tobacco smoke begins poisoning immediately — as more than 7,000 chemicals in each puff rapidly spread through the body to cause cellular damage in nearly every organ.

"That one puff on that cigarette could be the one that causes your heart attack," said Surgeon General Regina Benjamin.

Or the one that triggers someone else's: "I advise people to try to avoid being around smoking any way that you can," she said.

" Nor is there evidence yet to tell if efforts to develop so-called safer cigarettes really will pan out."

they already exist. they're called e-cigs. you know, the thing the fda fought tooth and nail against?

the government's hypocrisy and outright lies are utterly shameless.

They should also talk about the exhaust that I sit in every morning when I am sitting in stop dead bumper to bumper traffic for 20 minutes taking in all the exhaust. Well...I guess it's better here because you HAVE to get your car inspected (and shell out 100 bucks or so every year to do so), but when I was in Ohio it was amazing what people would drive around in...no inspection required. So I guess sitting in traffic in Columbus was worse.

I need to hang a shingle outside my window and give readings since I'm apparently a psychic now. I knew it wouldn't be a good week before we started hearing about the renewed dangers of smoke of any kind. Just wait. They're gearing up to start a campaign against nicotine directly and are prepared to say our exhaled nicotine vapor will be causing heart attacks. As it stands now, the SG is offering unintended support for non-smokeable tobacco products since the above criticism is directed at 'smoke'. Next we'll be told that the sight of anything that looks like a cig may be a public danger b/c the panic and anxiety from seeing one will cause heart failure.

There is no way that kinb of brief exposure to smoke could trigger a heart attack. What a bunch of hoohey. Yes, there is damage from short exposure, but it's minor and heals as the cells regenerate - it's not permanent. It's no different than the process our lung cells go through processing polluted city air - that does temporary damage, as well. But the fact that it DOES cause some damage is what they are playing up and making sound 10,000 times worse than what it is.

The damage of walking past someone smokingh is probably the same as you'd have when walking behind a city bus.

The Surgeon general also reccomends that people should pile up a bunch of soft pillows and blankets in the corner of their bedroom....then crawl into it and curl up in the fetal position. Thumb-sucking optional. They should stay there forever, because the world is simply too dangerous to venture out.

WELL SAID MAXX, That truly sums it all up and could serve to be "The State of the Nation" address.
I would only add, "....people, listen, there are simply not enough laws we can pass to keep us safe, so grab your non-allergenic, antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-everything pillows and blankets, put on your favorite tunes, curl up and insert thumb........oooops.......I hope your thumb has not touched ANYTHING in public because EVERYTHING out in public is coated, saturated and teeming with Dangerous, Deadly Toxins from 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th....hand smoke which has built up for decades.
Sad but true, new "research" has shown that 2nd hand smoke is "TRANSCONTINENTAL" so it is highly likely that the enormous amount of 2nd hand smoke generated by the "Indonesian Smoking Baby" has found it's way to the U.S. and probably has deposited some of it's Deadly Toxins on the outside doorknob of your home......you're screwed, Damn.......say goodbye
you're Dead!!

Maybe if we get Sean Penn or Mickey Rourke appointed as our next SG, they'll turnout a 700 page Obesity report on the dangers of eating just one Big Mac. Just one could clog arteries enough to cause a heart attack too.

OT, somewhat, did anyone see the fire that they set in CA to destroy that weapons stash? Tell me one breath of that smoke couldn't cause issues.
