I haven't had my SVD for too long but any decent brand battery should be safe. I heard bad stuff about any of the ...fire batteries but no personal experience.

Good thing to check for with any charger is auto circuitry to stop charging when the battery is full. If the charger doesn't have the auto off circuitry stay away from it.

I use the Panasonic 3400 mah batteries in my SVD, without any problems. Yes you do want to use unprotected batteries. Panasonic makes great batteries, I can go through 2 Protanks before they need charging. Vaporworld.biz has the 3400 mah batteries on sale right now for $8, which is cheaper than Fasttech.

    What charger do you use?

I concur. These are what I use in my SVD with great success. And that is a good price. I paid more than that on Amazon.

I like the look of 3400 mahs.

I saw vaporworld.biz has the SVD for 39.99 and the $8 pannys still on Black Friday sale.

    Currently, the Panasonic and Orbtronic NCR18650PF (LiNiCOMnO2) INR/ICR/IMR Hybrid 2900mAh 10A and
NCR18650PD (LiNiCoAl) 2900mAh 10A are the top-spec'ed batteries on the market for a regulated mod. These are high-drain, safe-chemistry hybrid batteries with the highest mAh rating in their class.

The Panasonic NCR18650A 3100mAh and NCR18650B 3400mAh batteries are NOT high drain batteries, with only a 6.8 amp limit. TECHNICAL - WHY HIGH DRAIN BATTERIES?

The best name-brand chargers for mod batteries are by Pila, Xtar, and Nitecore.
