I just started my DIY adventures last weekend by trying one flavor juices. Some of them obviously need a sweetener and before I destroy what I started, I wanted to get some input from the DIY'ers that have been at this for awhile.

I have a bottle of Stevia on hand and use it for various purposes. I've noticed that most recipes call for EM or sucralose. I believe, but not sure, that sucralose and Stevia are pretty much the same thing (correct me if I'm wrong).

My main question is, is there a huge difference in sweeteners and is EM better for e juice than Stevia or sucralose?

I've put some Stevia in some vendor juices and gotten mixed results, so I would really like to hear from some of you DIY guru's and experts on this subject.

Any/all input would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance :)

If all you want to do is sweeten and you're not averse to the taste, sucralose is the way to go. EM will sweeten too, but it also imparts a moist mouthfeel and softens sharp flavors. I use both.
I'm curious what EM is, please. I have always felt that sucralose or most added sweetners (to everything!) were not as healthy for you as Stevia is (for sweetness). I can't put my finger on where that info came from - perhaps a quick look online would/could answer which is best for us to ingest. I know aspartame is (blanket blank) just NOT good ever to ingest - take the added sugar/honey before the 'a' stuff - but some don't have that choice....

For me both aspartame and stevia cause tinnitus (really bad) but sucralose does not. Just because something is "natural" doesn't mean the natural chemicals in it won't cause a problem. Sucralose comes from the sugar cane plant... stevia from the stevia plant. I don't know what apartame comes from but its has something in common with stevia according to my body anyway.

Oh, and btw, I belonged to a health foods co-op and got the stevia leaves so there was nothing else in it to cause tinnitus. I tried many including liquid later. This was before sucralose was invented and I'm diabetic so my hunt for a sweetener was due to that. These are not the only two that cause blasting tinnitus. There's something many of them have in common.

Edit:.. oh, I think aspartame comes from tomatoes.

Ethyl maltol is an organic compound that is common flavourant in some confectioneries. It is related to the more common flavorant maltol by replacement of the methyl group by an ethyl group.[2] It is a white solid with a sweet smell that can be described as caramalized sugar and cooked fruit.
The conjugate base derived from ethylmaltol, again like maltol, has a high affinity for iron, forming a red coordination complex. In such compounds, the heterocycle is a bidentate ligand.

I have linked up a few videos for you about sucralose, the first video talks about the difference .I have been using EM and cotton candy to sweeten my juices ,and they have worked great for me .I might get around to trying the stevia sweet drops sometime soon ,but I just have not felt the need for it .Have fun with your diy !

I think I'm in gtbb's camp on this reply of Steven's (jokingly) - sorry, at 68, I'm feeling like you're talking Greek to me (as an American), I don't remember any schooling along the lines he's describing - perhaps my early use of saccharine has effected my brain?... but do agree with the YouTube video on the general Governmental acceptance of most any sweeteners they can make $ on, but tend to ban the items they can't control (naturally grown plants that produce very nice additives). Sorry to hear the good ones for us have adverse reactions for some folks though. NancyB

RE: the YouTube video:

It is true that there have not been extended (more than a few weeks) human studies on the effects of sucralose, but the studies that have been done showed no significant change in blood chemistry. It must be noted that the amount required to produce adverse effects in laboratory animals is very high. Presumably, to reliably generate those effects in a person, you would have to consume what might be regarded as a comically large amount of sucralose. The FDA considers 5mg/kg to be safe, and the level where adverse effects appear is 300 times that amount.

The conclusion I personally draw from this is that it is very unlikely to be harmful to us in the amounts that we would normally use. If you decided to sit down and eat a bowl of it, that might be a different story.
