From ELR:
"There are several types of sweeteners out there. The most common type is sucralose (like Sweetener (TPA)). There are also several types of Stevia-based sweeteners (which should be more healthy). They are mostly used in fruits, candy, and bakery flavors, and like EM a little (typically 1-2 drops per 10 ml) enhances flavors, while a bit more, like 1% and above, will add sweetness.
Marshmallow by The Perfumer's Apprentice is used like EM, for adding moistness and sweetness.
Molasses by The Perfumer's Apprentice imparts sweetness and a spicy note.
Brown Sugar by The Perfumer's Apprentice adds sweetness.
Most sweeteners brightens other flavors, and it's a good idea to start small."
thank you

Sweetener (or any additives I use) I classify as a flavor, as really, to be 100% accurate (not that I always am) you have to account for what you use in the mix to really get an accurate amount.

Honestly, I also use very little flavor, usually not more than a drop or two per 30 mls, if that. If you are first using sweetener I'd say keep it on the low side to start. Sweeteners (usually) can be shaken and vaped, so if you need to add more to your final mix, you can do so without having to wait around to steep and etc.

I very much prefer to add flavor/additives/sweetener to a mix if needed, it is SO MUCH easier than working on dilutions. Etc.

Best of luck,

Anna

While sweetener would be considered a flavor. I rarely use it and when I do, I don't bother putting it in a calculator as the amount used is too small to make any real difference in the rest of the ingredients. Every once in awhile I use CAP supersweet. Around 4 drops of it in 60ml. Not going to make much difference in the rest of the percentages.

Using sweetener sparingly is great advise. When inputting it into a calculator, I tend to use it at 0.1% and rarely over 0.4%. The only time I use the higher amounts is in flavors requested by others that have a serious sweet tooth, and ask me to make up a batch. I personally can't handle that much sweetener, and in my own mixes I tend to use a little cotton candy flavoring instead of sweetener.

It's an additive

While some might vape some directly, it's meant to be added.

Just like koolada, sour, and other additives that are meant to provide a change in the feel of the liquid (sweetness, coolness, sourness, etc.) but not actually change the flavour.

But as many flavours are sweet by default already, adding it is more for those that are on the over-sweet train. Lots of commercial liquids have so much sweeteners that it compensate for lack of quality... and they kill coils very quickly.

Many cannot distinguish sweetness from actual flavour.

@simon1973 I don't use sweetner much the VG is usually enough. When I use ethyl maltol, after mix is complete then I use the bottle"s dropper and start with 1 drop per 10ml of liquid and make even smaller adjustments from there. You will find using a quality nicotine, VG&PG you need to sweeten less and this brings out your flavors.

It's an additive that you add to your mix in a meaurable quantity therefore in a calculator it would be listed under flavors because there isn't a separate category for additives, and sweeteners are usually part of the recipe.

People who like sweet usually use it to cover up the godawful flavor/aftertaste inherent to artificial flavorings and/or extracts (there is a reason extracts aren't used in baking very often, and artificial flavorings are almost never used)

However the aftertaste for some reason can be covered up if you use sweetener. Therefore, there is a tendency for some to have a love of the stuff... It takes away the sharp edge of the aftertaste and just coats your tongue in sugar taste instead.

It's better that way anyway.. I hear people talk about being able to vape without sweetener, but the chemical taste of flavoring honestly makes me want to vomit. I do use different things to cover up that taste - but they are all called sweetener.

Just thought I'd throw that out there since you made the accusation that people who use sweetener just don't know "flavor".

My contention is we likely know it too well...

I think that's just funny...

There is no separate categories, as what would really be the point... it's like comparing all the stabilizers that they put in store bought bread.. like the MSG in ramen noodles soups. It's there, and does something, but it's role is to bring out the flavours, not be one.

If you have an aftertaste, then you're not using good flavours.. and if anything, a LOT of aftertaste is caused by the sweeteners. I know that in just about every store bought bottle, I can barely find one that I could vape as I taste the chemical sweeteners over whatever flavour they have in there. Heck, I can't even drink any "diet" soda as all I taste is that plastic film.

It's a huge part why I DIY, and I go with the best flavouring that I can get that has no crappy aftertaste, and I almost never use sweeteners (99.9% of the time) and when I do, I use Sugar Daddy, which is a new Canadian made one that's probably the best out there.

And so far, the people that I've given some of my liquid, or simply they use it all the time, there is none of that aftertaste you claim to taste without sweeteners. And all of these people have trouble using the store stuff afterwards as they now are able to taste that chemical thing and the sweeteners.

So what more can I really say about this....

Lol. We will just have to agree to disagree because I don't drink diet soda or store bought bread either for that matter (you can assume if it's a processed packaged food I don't eat it)

As a beside I don't use cheap flavorings.

So.. agree to disagree it is..

Boy, do I have bad news for you when it comes to how PG, VG and the flavourings are made....

Lol... I don't eat those either although I do know how they are made..

My meaning was I don't eat Oreo cookies, cold cereal, soup from a can, so on and so forth since you'd brought up diet coke. I'm one of those rare breeds of people who actually take the time to bake and cook what I eat.

That said, I will use tiny amounts of flavorings in things like rolled fondant or coffee because the sugar covers up the aftertaste, but in unsweetened applications they don't work - and that includes ejuice.

We'll have to get together and have a cook off as I do a lot of cooking too.

BTW, if you can get it, as you use sweeteners, (note, this isn't a plug, just info). here in Canada, we have a guy that's worked on and developed what's probably one of the best sweeteners, it's called "sugar daddy" and sold in a few DIY stores now, and starting to catch on. No aftertaste like the others, a true sugar taste to it, and test are showing that it's not a coil killer.

Check the DYI store "The broke vaper" if you're curious, as they're the ones that supported him and pitched in their assistance. (and the owner is a really true great guy).

Cool.. definitely worth trying..

I was using erythritol before I quit vaping with good results but still make ejuice for other people so i might give that a shot and see how it does...

I'm all in for a cooking get together !
