So I've been battling with this weird, non-painful, intense swollen throat problem when vaping.

I'm in the middle of trying to figure out if it's a question of a PG allergy, a VG allergy, flavoring, nicotine, etc. Frustrating, to say the least.

I've noticed, however, that I can chain-vape like a maniac if I have a beer. Which begs the question: does alcohol somehow clear whatever is causing the reaction from my throat, or am I just crazy?

Edit: Current beer - Back in Black IPA. Highly Recommended. Would offer better tasting notes, but ... alcohol.

Interesting, but I can't explain the beer clearing your symptoms. You can try mixing it up a bit with either higher VG vs PG or the reverse. Perhaps changing your flavor or even you flavorless eliquid. You were getting nicotine in the cigarettes so unless you are using an extremely high level, I would doubt that would be the problem. There's a chart on this forum which advises mg. of nicotine depending on how much you smoked. Hope this helps a bit and best of luck.

could be a PG or VG thing, IDK, because I'm no expert on that topic.

But just wanted to mention that the Nickel content of your wire might also merit a glance: Nichrome wire, Nickel wire. I gather smoking can result in Nickel sensitivity (permanent). A lot of the folks around here find that they get a sore throat when vaping with these. I don't get a sore throat; but I do get a sensation like my typical "sore throat area" is all one big "lump in my throat" when I go heavy on Nickel content. Usually goes away after a few days for me.

Dude, go see a Doctor. What you have going on isn't a normal vaping reaction. You could have a sinus or throat infection being aggravated by vaping - but not the actual cause of your problem either. There tends to be this belief by many vapors that every minute thing going on with their body is now somehow vaping related - and many times it isn't.

Recently discovered that I can't use Ni80 for this reason. Feels like a ferile cat is trying to claw its way out of my throat.
At first I thought maybe I had mixed my DIY incorrectly and gone too high on the nic, but the same liquid with a SS or kanthal coil is just fine.

Guys, while I'll certainly make an appointment with my GP, I'm surprised that this y'all are having such a strong reaction here - I had been under the impression that a lump in the throat sensation wasn't a surprising reaction.

I'm not downplaying your advice - I'm just surprised. What am I missing?

I'm pretty sure everyones concern is due to this being persistent. most vape related "side effects" are temporary. Yours seems to be more chronic. I would go see a doctor to, just to be sure.

Us former long term smokers have to remember, we did some serious damage that might not rear it's ugly head for years. Of course when they do show up, the FDA will blame your vape, that doesn't mean you should.

We are more than a little "sensitive" when a relatively new member pops in automatically thinking vaping is the cause of their issue. After smoking for years the "issue" is normally related to smoking or smoking cessation, not vaping. Hundreds of posts like yours, even though we do not know the true cause of the issue's, may pop up in a goog le search and deter someone from quitting the stinkies. We love our new hobbies and the health benefits we reap from vaping and not smoking. If there are real concerns about "safety" that's one thing.
Speculation on the safety is another. It is a threat to our way of life. You must appreciate how the technology has the potential to improve the lives and health of millions of smokers AND their family members, bad press IS and has been killing smokers since the start as many consider vaping to be too dangerous and will not even try it, due to mis-information and lies.

Due to a 40 year tobacco habit I was diagnosed with emphysema, after I started vaping. I know why I have lung disease! The FDA and media would love to blame it on the few months I'd been vaping at the time I was diagnosed. Let us not give them the ammo to kill the industry. They can do enough damage without it.

By all means, if you are noticing things that are of concern go ahead and ask, someone has likely experienced the same symptoms as you and may help. You will however find there will be pushback from the many that had no trouble(unlike you) at all.
We have been getting hit from all sides for a long time, just expect some defensive replies, that is all. Cheers.

Threads like this can be useful though. For instance, by looking and responding to this one, I learned of the Ni80 sensitivity. That was a new one on me.....we can all learn something from every thread it seems. You just have to read them.

Alcohol numbs things down a bit, but should make your problems worse in the long run. If your throat is swollen it's already having a hard time and you're not doing yourself any favors by adding alcohol to that as well.

I do recognize the symptoms though, for me the cause was PG. Even when I started DIYing and eliminated PG from my juice I still had some problems for a while until I switched to a different flavoring.

It can be frustrating, I was almost ready to give up vaping myself when the problems remained anyway, so good luck, I hope you'll figure it out soon!

Which is it? intense swollen throat or lump in throat sensation?

Either or, it is not a normal or common side effect of vaping PG or VG.

What you're missing is none of us here are doctors, it may be nothing much to be concerned about or it could be something serious.
No way to know without proper medical diagnosis.
