Long Time Lurker, have a question that can’t find an answer to by searching…

I recently decided to give a rebuildable tank system a try… So I purchased an EHPRO Taifun GT Clone…

I read many threads here on ECF and watched a ton of Youtube videos and figured I hand a pretty good understanding of what I was undertaking…

I began my first build after washing out the Taifun with distilled water..

After several attempts, I ended up with a 1.7 ohm coil ( 10 wraps, 28 Guage Kanthal around a 5/64” drill bit). I wicked with organic cotton…

Put it all together, first vapes were awesome(Great Flavor and vapor) and I thought I was on the right track… I was vaping at 11 watts on a ZMax. I went to bed and woke up in the morning and the vapes were horrible… tasted off and very little flavor… The cloud production was about the same.. I thought maybe I managed to burn the cotton somehow, so I dissembled, tossed the juice, washed everything out and dry burnt the coil.. I then rewicked and it still tasted horrible….

I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong, I really want to enjoy the Taifun GT and I did when I first tried it…

Any suggestions?

Thanks

youve twisted your wick when screwing the cap to the chimney.

the wick should be a straight line from opening of chminey through coil to the exit at other end

Agreed. Wick needs to be straight. I'd also try for a tad bit less cotton, with just a little overhang - less than you have. The wicks can be finicky on the GT - too much cotton and you'll get dry hits, too little and it will flood then leak. Also, make sure you pull the chimney ring up until you feel it "click" into place. It's easy to not have it right, then the o-rings won't seat properly. Keep at it though, it's worth it. Once you get it figured out, it's a great tank.

FYI - no need to dump out the juice when re wicking. Just turn it upside down, re wick, then put top back on. No point in wasting valuable juice!

The Taifun is a clone....

I will try and wash everything again.... I didn't use soap the first time (just distilled water), I was a little concerned about it maybe leaving a residual flavor.

I will try and use less cotton... Do I want to the cotton to be snug or loose in the coil?

I learned my lesson about the chimney needing to be pulled all the way, It wasn't once and it leaked like crazy..

Also, is 11 watts to much with a coil in the 1.5-1.8 ohm range?

Thanks for the tips

Cotton - loose if you twist it up dry. It expands when it soaks up juice.

11 watts might be a little high. A good indicator is if it taste burnt, turn it down. I generally start around 8.5, then go up to taste.

Here is a chart for guidlines, but it's in volts. Maybe somebody else has one in watts.

I have 3 Taifun GTs that I have been using for a year now, you just need to find a build that works for you and stick with it, it might take some time with lots of trial and error. I Personally put the coil as low as possible, the closer to the air hole the better which gives me a V shaped wick and I use a very thin amount of cotton to allow faster wicking for my chain vaping. My friend who also uses TGT saw my build and tried it and he hated it but works for me. I'm all about flavor not clouds.

Washing the atty does nothing. Coiling and wicking are the keys. A warm water rinse is all you need to do. It's a delicate balance between wicking, coiling, power and juice viscosity. Filling less juice than more juice tends to work better in general. Keep at it. It's frustrating at first but you will get the hang. Like someone mentioned above, you can unflange all your work with a bad assembly as well. Be very careful when reassembling everything. Make sure everything seats properly and any o-rings are not unflanged. There are many things to keep an eye on but it gets easier and easier. Based on your pic I would say less cotton. When cutting and threading, try not to twist the cotton too much as well. Handle it gently. It looks like your coil could be centered a little better. Distance off the air hole is experimental. Too close to the air hole and she will become a gurgler.

want to add, at 1.5ohms, 11 watts should be fine, if not optimal. You may or may not like the warmth there, but you sure shouldn't be burning juice there.

I'd want to move that coil so it's evenly between the posts, so your legs are the same length. And yes, keep those ports inline with your wicks.
Also, I dunno if this is an illusion in the pic or not, but it really looks like your coil is tapered from one side to the other, narrower at the right, than it is at the left. When you finish wrapping and annealing your coil, put it back on the screwdriver/drill bit and leave it in there while you tighten your screws, so it doesn't deform while you tighten them. The left side of the coil looks awfully close to the post. Hope its not shorting there.

Frankly, your wick looks fine to me; seems to be adequately wet and reasonably sized.

When you wick light fluffy cotton but enough to fit through the coil. Put the chimney on with the wick holes aligned with the air hole and keep them straight. Screw the top of chimney on. Flip your tank upside down and fill to the o-ring inside the tank. Insert your bottom base upside down and tightened. Making sure everything is still aligned, air hole to wick channel.

When I run into the same problem you have the chamber has flooded.

Next time I rebuild the Taifun, I'll take some step by step pictures. Here you can see the wick and air hole aligned.

Just curious which Taifun GT clones have the least problems. I purchased the HCigar brand and it was wonderful until I washed it the second time and now it is shorted out. Is there any clone that works without the shorting problem? BTW, I have moved the center pin up and down and it says "non" on my regulated device and the ohm meter runs up and down quickly never giving a reading now. I have read the other thread which proposes fixes to the insulator between deck and brass deck, but I have little hand strength or tools to get the thing back together. If you have a brand you've used for an extended period with no problems, I'd love to know which brand(s) you have. TIA!

normally people will have this problem with the twisted chimneys.i had the same problem with my clone too,i will get burnt vapors.the twist normally happens when screwing the the top as the wick will be in contact with the walls which will cause it to turn.mostly caused by,
BAD O rings.try replacing the O rings and drip a juice along the walls to make it slide instead of turning.
i replaced my O rings alot, but cant seem to stop the chimney from turning.what i did was i used those rubber tapes(white colour) where u normally use for plumbing.cut and wrap it ONE tight loop(2 loops will be too tight for the chimney to screw in),then put the o rings.it widens the o rings by a few mm and tightens the chimney in place.this solved the leaking issues for me and fear of twisting the chimney.hope this helps
