I am anexperienced vapor but I can't get this damn thing to run smooth at all. I've tried silica, ekowool, cotton, mesh, and even Koh Gen Do cotton(my favorite at the moment) for it(worked the best out of all the others but still ended up failing after a short time.)

I am using 28g kanthal and running at 1.0 ohms. I've tried taking the center pin and insulator out to create a larger airflow but I kept flooding it. I put those back in and I got it to run a little better. That fixed the flooding problem but my main problem is wicking. I keep getting dry/burnt hits which eventually ruins the cotton. My coil builds are running flawlessly. I just don't what I'm doing wrong in the wicking portion of my build. Any tips, guys?

Here's the way I run it and it works really well for me. My device won't fire below 1.2 ohm, so I coil 28 ga to 1.3/1.4, right in there. But I install it vertically right over the center hole. I'll hold it in place with my 1/16th bit actually stuck in the hole while I connect the legs, that holds it nicely in place. Then I wick it, two fluffy strips of cotton run side to side around the outside of the coil. Wicks great, hits great, never gurgles or floods, no dry/burnt hits. I pulled the center pin and grommet, but actually ended up putting the grommet back in, but not the pin. That's about right for me, but it's probably personal taste. I typically vape at 12 to 15 watts, depending on the juice. You might need more air at higher wattage.
Hope this helps, I really like the tank, it vapes really well for me!

My experience is that cutting the cotton diagonally prevents the wick from being choked and also prevents flooding.

Here is my favorite build on the GT. This pic is after a week ready to clean, dryburn, and rewick. 28g dual coils 1.2 ohms with ramie wicks.
Have 6 GT's with this setup and three more on the way.:)

Rewicked and ready to assemble and trim.

From one of my other threads:

I have been using 6 Taifun GTs almost exclusively for the last few months with horizontal micro coils. Every time I rewick them, I wonder what is the best length to leave the wicks stick out the sides. Long, pressing on the tank, or flush not touching the tank wall?

Back to my make shift capillary action lab:

Remember those quartz tubes we experimented with a while back to encapsulate a wick? I took 6 three inch tubes and threaded cotton, hemp, and ramie thru them. PITA. I left 3mm of wick sticking out the bottom. I then placed one of each type in a jar with the end of the wick resting on the bottom and the other three just off the bottom of the jar. Added juice to the jar.

Results:
All the wicks that were off the bottom wicked faster and higher than their equivalent wicks resting on the bottom. As an added test I cut the wicks of the "off bottom" flush with the quartz tubes and the results were the same.

Conclusion:
You get better wicking (capillary action) when the end cross section of the wick is exposed to the juice and not if it is resting on the tank surface. So now I cut all my Taifun GT wicks flush so they do not press against the tank.:)

try rayon wicking. ive got 26ga .7ohm build. i even have the air intake drilled out to 7/64 with no air limiting tube or delrin insert.
clouds are kayfun like. flavor is very good. no dry hits at all ....ever! no gurgling... perfect everytime. dont have to change wicks very often like cotton.

check out the rayon thread...youll be glad you did
hope this helps

I did some experiments with drill bit sizes and wicking a while back for the Taifun GT. The best results I got was a #43 drill bit, which is .089" or 2.26mm. It's perfect diameter to thread a doubled piece of Peaches & Cream yarn through, with just the right amount of resistance. Clip the ends of the yarn off just a little beyond the chamber, and it's done. It won't leak a drop. I use the same size bit on the Kayfun.

Hi Rule62,
Going by my location, it's not just a case of calling into Michaels, etc.
Is this stuff in the link the same as you are using ? if so I may give it a try.
What coils are you building ?
Appreciate your help, I'd like to try some coil wrapping.
Very happily vaping my TaifunGT's with FT premade 1.8 ohm NR-R-NR coils with 4x1mm wicks
which are great but 4x1mm wicks don't dry-burn very well, the gunge seems to get lodged
in-between the wick-lets.

Yes, that is the correct stuff. I usually build with either 26g or 28g kanthal, depending on the resistance I'm after. On a regulated mod, like a Provari, I keep the resistance a bit above 1.2 ohms. Usually around 1.3 or 1.4. On a mechanical, I'll build around .8 or .9 ohms. I like my micro coils to be between 8 and 10 wraps.

jimkipila,
I skimmed through your OP because I don't have any experience with cotton in my 5xTaifunGT's
but see now that you also tried silica/ekowool etc.
When I got the first one I checked the smokerstore.de website of the original manufacturer for their
'user's manual'
They supply a length of 2mm silica and form it into an S-shape so you finish up with
6mm in the coil-chamber slots.
I started with 4x1mm wicks in the ready-made coils and added a 2mm silica snippet through the
slots but not covering the coil and it has worked a treat on all of them.
If you can't get the cotton wicking sorted out - and from what I have read it's a question
of quantity of cotton - you may want to shoot for 6mm of silica.
Best of luck.

If wicking with cotton, my experience has been that a larger coil, therefore, larger wick, works best on my GT.

I use my Taifun GT on a mechanical mod, and I build for 0.8-0.9Ω. Using a 2.2mm bit (aka piece of coat hanger) I do 7 wraps of 26ga wire and position the coil so that the top of it is just above the screw heads which seems to keep the wicks in line with the slots in the chamber sleeve.

I use a little extra cotton through the coil to prevent flooding, but it still pulls through relatively easy. I clip the tails about 2mm outside of the sleeve.

Prime the wick before installing the cap on the chamber.

Thanks for the above help, my Peaches&Cream came today. I had already built a 1.5ohm coil with 28gauge kanthal which turned out to be 28and a half gauge (0.30mm) on #43 drill bit, 7/6 wraps. I was going to try and wrap it with facsimile of a DarkZero coiler but remembered I had a lathe! so wound it on that (by hand) tensioned in my fingers. Mounted it OK and threaded a loop of the P&C, closed up and snipped off then thought I would do a final resistance check on the Provari - mistake, sniff, sniff  Re-threaded and vapes wonderfully. Getting a bit of a buzz on Hangsen RY4/18mg, might have to drop down some...
This forum and contributors are an inspiration, thanks all.
