A few days ago, I got some spare parts, two Taifuns, and have been enjoying them ever since. However, also included in the package, was something I ordered that I haven't done in a long time... I ordered two Ego twist clone batteries. I've had a kanger protank sitting around for a long time, and I figured I'd dust it off, clean it up, and see if I can get it working again.

I rebuilt the protank coils back in the days, so I knew I would have no problems rebuilding it. Even though I still have several yards of Silica wick, I decided to mix newer wicking methods, so I used muji cotton. It takes very little cotton, and I found a piece sitting around on the bottom of my build box. I twirled it into something that was the right thickness, put a straight pin through the cotton, and wound five wraps of 32 gauge kanthal around it. Stuck it on my Vamo V7, and it read 1.6 ohms... perfect. put the coil in, took out the safety pin, and re-assembled the coil. Cut the extra cotton, and pre-wet the wick. It filled the chamber nicely. Filled with juice, and set it on the Ego.

I was surprised at how much vapor came out. Still not near as much as my RBAs, but definitely more than expected. Last time I used this setup, I was on 50/50 pg/vg, and silica wicks. This time I am on 20/80 pg/VG and now using cotton wicks. I've vaped half a tank already, and so far, no leaking, gurgling, or dry hits. Taste is pretty good, but getting used to the old mouth to lung inhales took some time getting used to. Even at 6mg, the nicotine seems to feel stronger oddly enough, and I'm getting a tickle in my nose.. probably due to the mouth to lung. Overall, I'm impressed, taking a step back in generations of Ecigs, and using modern wicking techniques, it seems to work well.

I think I'll give my Sigeli 100 a rest for a day, put the old mechanical mod back on the shelf for a bit, and just chill with the old ego and protank for a day to see how things go.

There is a lot to be said for this style of vaping, your thread made me smile, as you can see, I like to sub ohm, vape at very high wattage and lower resistance, had all the sub ohm tanks and just got sick of the battery draining, big box mods, juice guzzling coils. I had to take a step back, it's just gone to far. I bought a Kabuki tank, I got laughed at by the uneducated, the ones that have never tried it, the ones that know nothing about it, they just get it into their heads its a very expensive Nautilus and dismiss it, it is built with the best materials and designed with a lot of thought and works extremely well. This tank has the best flavor out of everything I have ever tried with a 1.6 ohm coil vaping at 12 watts, I mean everything, from dual coils, to quad coils to rebuildables, of course you wont get clouds, but I'll take flavor over vaper production any day. I have come full circle and the age of the old school vaping never really went away and is still very popular, it's just that 80% of these vapers don't go on forums and it seems the industry have flooded the market with sub ohms. You say to someone on, I can get more flavor out of a Nautilus BVC coil at 1.6 or 1.8 ohm's at 12 watts than you can out of a quad coil at 90 watts and they will laugh and walk away.

Tried and old carto from my box of antiquated vape gear a week ago, and I was surprised too. Not sure of the ohms, probably a 1.8. I dripped it till saturated and vaped away amazed at the capacity of the old tech. Weirdest thing was how skinny it was compared to a 22mm RTA. Didn't last long either, not alot of wicking in there to keep the coil saturated, but a good throwback nontheless.

Hey, not judging at all. Took my PT3 couple weeks ago and put a Ni200 build into a head and slapped it on my Vaporshark at 350F, with my broken PT1 base, little bad boy was very very very tasty XD, though reached top temp setting quickly, waiting on an aerotank airflow base to arrive to have a go at that again. Feeling nostalgic, rebuilt another head, slapped onto my old iTaste VV V3, and toodled around on that a whole day happy as a dang lark until I got tired of the restricted air flow and went back to the SVD 2.0 and Kayfun setup I normally run at home.

I actually just vaped forward the remainder of my Aerotanks and protank 2's with the aero base. I hated to see them just sitting there. Their new owner is just as happy as I was with them when I first started using them over the EVODs.

I always wanted an IBTanked tube, as they are truly beautiful. I really wish I could've found a carto I liked. Maybe I was just too impatient back then to let it break in. Who knows, I may get one just yet. I did work a ton of OT this past weekend. Are Smok slotted cartos still the one to get?

I got my old Nautilus back in a trade from the guy I traded it to recently. I fired it up and was surprised at the fact that it still satisfies my need for nic. I personally get some sort of emotional release from a bigger cloud though. That's why I upgraded from the Nauti. But for a juice miser and flavor maker it's still a decent tank. I'm using it almost daily again for my DIY Bourbon Tobacco juice. Old school is good sometimes. :thumb: But I don't think I could go back to a PT or eGo tank. I hated those from the get go.

I relate to the changes with our computers. Anyone remember doing about as much on a 8 bit computer with 4 meg of ram and a 40 meg hard drive?
As advances in equipment happen we tend to become less efficient in how we use them.

Regardless of how much we might like the cloud or flavor, high wattage/sub ohm are the least efficient ways to vape.

This monstrosity of a quad processor 64 bit, 8 gig memory, and 1T hard drive isn't a bit faster than my old 286 was.

Isn't it amazing how quickly things become "old school" in the vaping world.
This reminds me of when I worked in a vape shop last year. I had only been working there for a couple of months. I was using cartotanks exclusively, and the only salesperson who used them. I had had several customers who were dissatisfied with clearomizers, and had been successful in converting them to cartotanks...and they loved them. They were still using eGo batteries, and weren't ready to purchase a mod or RBA, so the cartotank was the obvious intermediate step for them.

I was giving another such customer a demo with a cartotank, when my shift manager interupted us and said, "You don't want that. That's old school technology. No one uses cartotanks. Take a look at this new "advanced" clearomizer we just got in."

I was totally peeved, but I bit my tongue. Long story short, that shift manager eventually got fired for various reasons. And I eventually converted to using rebuildables exclusively.

Store management had not responded to my requests to get in a better affordable cartotank like an IBTanked (we only had the cheapo Smoktech tanks and an expensive $50 pyrex tank) or the tank tools that I had requested. Limited tank selection and not stocking the tank tools made cartotanks a tough sale, and I was the only one selling any. Management said they couldn't make money on cartotanks and they were going in another direction -- clearomizers and rebuildables.

:( Sad but true. They don't want you buying a system that will not need to be replaced.

So true, while I know people who would replace their attys every week, I also know if taken care of they can last for months. You don't make money if someone is only buying an atty every couple months.

My Kayfun clone is a lil over 9 months old. Aside from a couple of scratches from being dropped it's still almost like new. 7 coils (the first 4 were experiments to see what I liked on it), a dozen new wicks (mostly from changing flavors)... I bet it hasn't cost me $2 since I bought it. Same with my drippers. I can't see the upside to $5 coils for subtanks.

And $7 Cisco 306 can last 4 to 6 months with proper care, and I don't have to rebuild it.

Edited to add: It should also be noted that while it isn't a cloud chasing atty, you can get good vapor production and the flavor is wonderful with them. Due to the small chamber size, they also require less power which means my cells last longer, and I go through a lot less juice, avg around 3-4 mls a day dripping.

My all day vape is one of those P thingies with a carto tank on top.

    Lets see now:
    1 18490 lasts all day
1 tank of juice lasts all day
    The flavor is great
It's the simplest fool proof way to vape that there is
Well, since this IS a thread about "old school" vaping...

Your setup maybe be simple, but not the simplest or most fool proof.
I am still using my 510 atomizers on an Ego Twist.

You just can't get much simpler or fool proof than that!
    :D

But I do understand that this may not be feasible for someone who vapes a lot more than I do.
Which is almost everyone I guess.
    :)

I like the act of dripping as it replaces my previous smoking routines.
And I'm also a crusty old dinosaur, at the ripe age of 49 years.
