I can't argue with your logic and experience. You do get what you pay for. My problem with external batteries is twofold:

1. Fear of F-ing up. Just last month Nick Green mentioned in his Vlog about having a battery go critical because he absent mindedly put it in upside down. If an OG vaper like Grimm can mess up - odds are 99.44% that I will. So even if I get a mod with a swapable battery I would prefer to leave in place and charge by usb port till it's time to throw the bat away.

2. I'm tighter than Dick's hatband. Gotta buy the batteries. Gotta buy quality brand name bats or they blow up. Gotta buy two at a time so they can get married or something. Gotta by a charger. Can't be a cheap charger or it blows up. Nickle and dime on extra stuff till it doubles the price on the mod. ;)

Hi @WereBear i would also just say using separate 18650s is pretty darn easy. You can get a good charger for 30 bucks (nitecore d4 on amazon or xstar) and it can also do aa/aaa if you ever have a need for those. I think that maybe the fact mr grimm has hundreds of devices and is swapping a lot might make it more likely to make a mistake versus constantly just using the 1 device. Maybe, maybe not :) Using the usb charging on lipo batteries has had its issues too. Personally i like the control of having a good charger and getting the safest batts i can from illumn.

As for the tightness i dunno, guess it depends, i would wager that over a couple of years you would save by using rellaceables and a quality device versus chucking out the whole mod when the batts no longer good. More choices too using replaceables.

Anyways, good luck! Just some thoughts. Whatever your new shiny ends up being i hope you love it :)

I can understand your fear of external batteries. It took me a while to gather the courage to give it a go. It's not complicated at all. Almost all regulated mods have reverse polarity protection. And think of the cost of the batteries and charger as an investment. Batteries die. It will be a lot cheaper in the long run to replace a set of 18650s, then the whole mod. You can get good priced, authentic batteries here

Illumn.com - Flashlights, Batteries, Carry Gear, Intelligent LED Lighting, and More!

And I have to give a +1 on the ipv4s. That and the ipv3 Li, with the yihi chip are solid performers. As a former istick 50w owner, I can say, the difference is noticeable, even using the same watts.

Thanks for suggestions and especially for that link. Looks like they have good prices on rebuilding supplies... and led light diy supplies... and mag lights... ummm geek porn. ;)

If you really don't want external batteries, you can't beat those istick 50W for size and battery life.

However, if you want a mod that can do anything for down the road, my Sigelei 100Ws have been great for the price. Vaporrange and Elev8 have great prices right now on the 100W+. No tc, big, but really well made. And the reverse battery protection works. I've put one in wrong at least twice myself.

The sigelei 150 (not the temp control) are also well built and i believe go for about 60 now. The fir and finish feels pretty great for that price.
