I have been noticing that with all my tanks when I’m loading up the second tank full that my juice is getting lots of back wash from the wicking. So much so that my liquid is almost black. Not only is it really dark from the back wash of the wick/coil but that the taste is degraded substantially.

I find that I’m having to rinse out my tank, let it dry and start over clean again with just about every tank full. This is true of my Vivi Nova with fiber wicks (long and short), my Line V2 with stainless steel mesh and my tanks with punched carto’s.

I was wondering how prevalent this is and what if anything you folks might be doing about it preventing it. The picture attached shows the color my juice starts out as (on the left) and the color of it by the time I get down to about a quarter remaining (on the right).

Yup, I've had this issue with all the tanks like that. It just gets so hot in them that the liquid gets all concentrated and nasty. The only way I have heard to avoid (well.. not really the right word) is to wash it out between fills :( One of the reasons I can't use the SDs.

I've had this issue less with carto tanks, it really depends on the juice with those ones but it definitely doesn't get near as nasty as it does with the tanks like the one you have pictured. It might change a shade or two but no degradation in taste. For me anyways.

You don't get it much with carto tanks because the juice doesn't really come back out. If you slice one open and take a look at the core of a well-used one though you'll see enough darkened juice stuck in the middle. However this is a problem with most liquid. I don't understand the chemistry behind it exactly but I seem to recall it had something to do with the PG-based ingredients vaporizing faster than the VG (there's probably a boiling point difference between the two) such that over however long it takes, what you end up being left with is more of the VG and less of the PG ingredients. Coupled with the scorching of the juice backwashing into the tank, that's where you get your dark, thick remnants from. I don't even know if this can be solved by using all-PG juice but it would probably improve things; you'll still get some darkened backwash as that's just the nature of applying a viscous liquid to a red hot coil. It's not a particularly acceptable solution however as I like VG in my juices so I just deal with it and give it a good cleaning when it gets bad enough.

I think your onto something there mindfield. I've only recently made the change to 100%vg juices and it's very obvious now whereas it wasn't so much before.

That would make sense then. Almost all flavourings are PG-based (or in any event use a very thin base like triacetin or alcohol), so the diminishing flavour would be accounted for in that it would get used up more quickly than the VG base.

WOW...deff gross, I have always used a glass tank with a boge carto..and never changes color. Inside the carto may look like that but inside the tank is normal

Edit...thinking about it..when i was using Ego-T's this would happen

my wife gets this with her dark sweet juices but my clear tobacco flavored juices do not...could the sugar ..or sweet have something to do with it as well?

Anything that does not travel well up or through the wick gets left behind and becomes thicker and darker. If you vape to the last drop you will find it gets sweeter.

Interesting about the PG/VG Mindfield.

I've been using a ver 2 Stardust for the last few weeks and have noticed the severe darkening, but never after only one tank-full. I find if I wash it out every few tanks it's OK. Easy to do with this Stardust. I always make sure I clean the wick and coil too. Good rinse with hot water from the tap, dry the coil with a Q-tip, dry burn, rinse again and dry the coil again.

Makes me wonder though what is happening inside a carto!
