Tanks use cartos (cartomizers) not carts.
I get the impression that many get about double life out of a carto using it in a tank. As always, you get the best carto like with totally clear juices (dark, cloudy and opaque juices often drop flavoring sediment that clogs cartos). I use thin juices with normal cartos (like 80PG/20VG for good flow through the stuffing) but I think with the carto tanks you can use juices with higher VG than that since the carto is surrounded.
Some people say that with some tanks they are able to push one carto in by using a new carto to push it through, ending up with the new carto in the tank (you then may need to prime the carto by dripping a bit of juice or by sucking on the end of the carto to bring some juice into it from the tank. Carto tanks use cartos that have hole(s) or slot(s) in their sidewall for the liquid to get in. However, some tanks (like the Madvapes ones) use cartos with a wide flange/shelf on the carto near the threaded end which acts as an additional seal - I don't think you can push those through.

I am essentially a strict carto tank user. I use atomizers to test a new flavor and from there, either it fails or it ends up in a tank.
That being said, when I first starting started using cartomizers, no tanks involved, I got about three fills (on an average sized carto holding about 1.5ml of e-liquid) before they started to taste a bit bland. I am all about intense flavor so I honestly never use a carto until it dies, just until I start tasting filler. And I'm pretty big on low maintenance vaping, so I don't bother with all the cleaning nonsense.
Since a good tank with a decently punched carto will keep the carto consistently filled, I get, on average, four tank fills with a 3-5ml tank before I don't get a full-bodied taste anymore. That's up to 20ml through one carto! And I commonly buy my cartos in bulk through Vapor Kings, so not only is it a stress-free way to vape, but it's relatively easy on the wallet.
As for when a carto goes "bad", I typically get a bit of a bland taste on the last tank fill, and then junk the carto after I vape through it. If you find yourself in a "gotta change that carto now" situation, you can pop off your top cap on your tank and pour the juice into an extra bottle (I keep several on hand) or even back into the original bottle if it's just one flavor. You will lose the minute amount of juice in the carto, but the tanked juice is easily salvageable as it has not been vaped. No weird tastes whatsoever in my experience.

P.S. - Forcefully pushing a new carto into your tank can damage your inner o-rings on any carto tank. The Slap Yo Mama adapter from Big Daddy Vapors and the 510 type A delrin drip tip from RTD Vapor make for easy insertion that is gentle on your o-rings. Adding some 100%VG to the inner o-rings for lubrication helps a lot too.
