Well only one vape store here in Cape Coma has any gennies, and they are gathering dust in a locked case that no one but me ever looked in. I got them to sell me an authentic Kraken for $80, which was a lot cheaper than the price tag. The staff there looks down on gennies and those who use them. I got snide remarks for vaping on my gennies there. After that I never went back again. I was only there to get the Kraken in the first place.

You are right about one thing, when I got to gennies early on in my vaping journey that was it. I had what I wanted and I am still satisfied with them. I tried a dripper back then, and just did not care for it at all and tossed it into the cigar box. A couple years later I gave it away to some kid at work. I have 14 gennies now, but have settled on the DID's and the Krakens for the most part.

No matter what you vape someone will give you crap for it, but it seems more so with gennies, because everyone is so very into the latest re-invention of the wheel and so proud of getting the latest whiz-bang gizmo-mod/atty with all the whistles, bells, and gimmicks. From where I sit the perfect vape was settled with the genny long long ago, and all this new stuff is just expensive fluff.

Very well said.............

@Vaslovik well-put! I'm not sure if many have heard of the group The Modtrader on Facebook but it's a group for people to buy and sell REALLY high-end stuff... I routinely see people buying certain atomizers for $4-700 (!!!!!) and stab wood box mods for $3,000 and beyond. I just gawk.

If you want someone to unload that Z Atty U on, I'd be willing to tinker with it... is it really THAT bad? I like to see if I can make the un-vapable vapable haha

Oh I really really tried to put a build on that Z Atty U that would vape right, but it's just designed all wrong by that arrogant bearded muppet, Zen, who thinks he knows it all about vaping and wants us all to use 32 kanthal and his skinny little wicks he thought he had to roll up for us because he knew best and had to do it for us. I have some choice words for that cranky old duffer! I paid $50 for that piece of junk, thinking because it had a name it must be good, and it wasn't, at all.

That it's made of surgical grade steel is just a waste of good material because of his design which might work for a 2 ohm tootle puffer on a Provari, but it's a pretty sorry example of a genny for use on a mech and from where I sit a sad waste of good steel. First off I had to punch that stupid plastic sleeve out of the wick hole to get a decent sized wick in there instead of the skinny little things packaged with it, then it turned out that the center post was made so you could not put a decent sub-ohm coil on it at all, and would have to use Zen's 32 kanthal, also packaged with it to be used in the laughably sloppy high ohm builds recommended in his videos. This was all Zen's idea of how we should all be vaping, according to Zen. Presumably we could email him to roll us more wicks and wind our coils for us too....

I'm pretty sure he drives an Edsel... and thinks we all should.

That's a shame. It's a nice looking atomizer.

I, too, highly dislike those skinny little twigs-for-wicks, lol! And, IMO, if you need insulating sleeves for your builds, you can't build gennies.

:)

We seem to think a bit alike here :)

Yes, it's a nice looking atty, but that's all that's nice about it, and of course that's far from enough. It sits in my cigar box still. I might just pitch out out someday.

Well, if it's only meant for cotton it's not a genny at all, but give it a shot, you might like this new atty. Gennies use a vertical mesh wick and a vertical coil, not cotton. Some do wick them with cotton, but then it's not a genny anymore, and you did say you wanted to learn gennies.

Yeah I know. That's why I said i kinda got a genny. I guess it's genny style. It wprks, trying to figure out a good build for it and best wicking method but it is nice flavor. I'm having a hard time finding mesh though. I guess I will have to buy online for it. Where do you guys buy yours from

Well, no, actually it's not even genny "style". It's an RTA, not a genny. That's not to say it won't work for you, and give you a vape that works for you, so try it out and see how you like it.

I mean style as in tank on bottom with wicks going into it from the coil that sits atop. I understand your adamant about the definition of what makes a genny and I get but the avocado more resembles a genny then it does say a kayfun. I do like it but until I can get a hold of some steel mesh I'm not getting a real genny.

Well then just use what you've got for now, but mesh isn't that hard to come by:

Go to eBay and search 'Benny the Stooge mesh.' The pricing is great and the shipping is fast. He has a wide selection of dimensions and weaves. Cheap, fast and reliable.

Hope this helps.

Well i know this thread is a bit old but I finally got a genny. I got a prometheus clone as it came prebuilt. However the minute I applied even the smallest of current to it the coils popped so I had to build it myself. Well this is infuriating to me. I'm using 28 guage and the wicks that it came with as I'm waiting for some mesh to come in the mail. I built a 5 wrap single coil on it and I resolved the mesh and torched it well... very very well. I'm blaming the mesh it came with because if there is any flavor it taste like a short but there's no hot spots that I see and it glow from the inside out. I'm guessing it is probably cheap quality steel. Any ways hopefully I can get it figured out. It's funny because I can build super complicated coils for drippers and kayfun style rtas are no problem for me but this is a whole new beast to me and shops are of no help because the workers there either have no idea what a genny is or if they do its been so long since they've messed with one that they've forgotten how to do it

@Smellybelly Find a bit that fits in the wick hole, with a bit of space around it.

Attach your wire to the top post. Position wire to the wick hole. 'Sew' your coil down the bit, snug but not too snug. Fasten bottom lead.

Fire coil a couple times. Put bit back in, and tidy the coil.

Unravel wick. Roll around a straightened piece of thick wire, or some sort of mandrel. Gives you a straw wick.

Install wick into coil. If it takes too much work to get wick in, roll a little tighter. Wick should go in with just a bit of pressure.

Make sure there are no gaps, esp at top lead. This leads to dry hits and bad taste. Work out hot spots. Fill and vape. Should taste nice right away.

Hope this helps

I did this after I posted. I didn't sew it threw though. I wrapped the coil on the bit while in my hand not with the bit going into the wick hole. Seemed easier for me and made sense to me. I then put the bit into the wick hole with the coil still on it and secured the leads. Then took out the bit and put the wick in. Went in but with a slight resistance. Just enough for me to be sure it was touching but not to tight to deform the coil. Pulsed it a few times and fixed a hot spot and it was glowing nice and even from inside out. First couple of hits were ok. Lacking flavor but I think that's because I don't know what wattage to vape it at so I'm doing low to avoid catastrophes. Like 13 watts. I went to 17 watts and the flavor started to be noticeable but there was an off flavor which I'm assuming was the wick as it is the one that came with the tank. My build by the way is a single 28 guage nichrome with 5 wraps around a 2mm bit. It's all I have right now that would be suitable for a genny. I get some new wick in on the 8th though so hopefully that'll be a game changer.

It's the nichrome. I know some people really like it. I don't like it at all. Bummer, because it's easier to wrap a coil with it than kanthal.

Builds with nichrome have a lower resistance than kanthal. And i have observed with my own setups--that if my resistance is too low, gennys cook my juice too much. Mind you, i use mechs only. If you run a dual coil, with a lower resistance--the coils do not get as hot. And i like a dual-coil now and then.

I have Nectars that i'm playing around with.( Avocados are still in-transit. ) 5/4 28g kan on a 2.5mm bit gives me 0.7Ω. My u-wick was only ~25mm wide. I find that my juice tastes 'off' after about half a tank. So i will prolly roll 35mm of mesh, and add a wrap.

U-wick for Avocado--cut it on the bias, or get diagonal-cut mesh. u-wicks are a bit of a pain-in-the-..... I found that adjusting its elbows gets rid of the hot legs. Good Luck!!

has anyone ever tried the trick of rubbing your mesh wick on some cotton and winding up with a thin skin of cotton on the mesh and then inserting the wick into the coil..

It seems to work great for me ...........you get the advantage of a mesh wick and a bonus of the thin cotton skin..........rubbing the wick on the cotton pulls little chards

of cotton onto the mesh......seems to be a great extra thing for me.....I use the RSST...that I have had for 2 years........still a classic!!!!!!
