I tried a thread like this before not too long ago but it wasn't going the way I intended.

Basically, I was hoping that those of us who really love vaping would take some time to review the issues they had to overcome, and how they overcame them. I hope that our struggles will help give the gnubies some encouragement when they encounter problems and get frustrated. I also hope that it will provide a lot of collective experiences, issues they might anticipate ahead of time, and ways others have resolved those issues.

So if you guys don't mind sharing, I'll start it off...

My first drag was a nightmare of burnt metal taste and super harsh vapor. I had taken a drag immediately after putting the cartridge on, and it had not had time to wick up any juice yet! I set it down and by the time I got the courage to try it again, it was fine.

I also struggled a lot with automatic batteries, and was getting a fair amount of juice in the mouth because I would keep on sucking even though the battery had decided to stop long before I did. I might still be struggling with them to this day if I had not gotten my 510 with manual batteries.

After I got the 510 I struggled with wicking issues, and was getting a lot of that yummy dry atomizer flavor because I was taking too many drags in too short of a time. But altering my smoking pattern was not a valid altermative for me, since my main thing is taking smoke breaks. So I absolutely had to start trying various cartridge mods.

I struggled with the frequent dry atomizer flavor until I found the blue foam. This would have been enough to solve my issue, but I eventually moved to the ADM mod with blue foam and now I'm all set when it comes to cartridges.

After that I struggled a bit with being too lazy to refill sometimes, so I started dripping more often, and more often, and more often. Now I only drip, except when I am going out somewhere that really requires the convenience of a cartridge.

My first purchase was the 801 & 901's and I used them for quite a while. I was finding myself exchanging batteries every few hours, always having to charge extra's , constantly filling the carts. It honestly took up quite a bit of time each and every day to just get prepaired for my day.

I finally started researching the bigger battery mod's and just took a leap of faith and bought one. I'm so glad that I did. I finally found batteries that would last me all day long and sometimes 2 days without recharging ! This was a breakthru.

Then i discovered cartomizers...wow, a little cart that would hold enough juice for 1/3 of my day without refilling !

Then amazingly the easy fill cartomizer thread came along...and that solved the whole problem of taking apart the cartomizers and filling them drop by drop.

This has truely been a journey and I'm just now finding i'm relaxed with the whole experiment faze and have found my ultimate comfort zone.

Of course...I still try different mod's but have basically found the ones I want to stick with...I always have 2 or 3 to choose from and I'm very happy with the vape.

I didnt mention above the journey of the eliquid...but that too was a learning experience.. I've found the right liquid for me and loving it. I do mix my own and also purchase ready mix from certain suppliers...I feel having 4 or 5 stable juices that you really love are plenty to keep you going. I Tried quite a few to find those ultimate 4...but it was well worth the whole journey.

@DC2, That was a really good post for this thread. One thing I can add to it is, not to over fill cart. I have also found once you find the right viscosity for liquid and filler setup you don't need the cart mods for normal vaping. Once you figure this out you waste less juice by flooding. If you flood a lot, juice is to thin a little glycerin will thicken. If you are not chain vaping and your cart is not wicking but filler is moist you are to thick you want thin a little with ionized water. Make small changes in small batches cause the next piece of filler may have a different density. This is why a lot of vapers drip. Hope this helps the new guys have a smoother transition.

I wish I would have heeded wv2win's advice earlier - go to a mod. In my case the 14500 batt and the 510 atty. One other significant change was using the blue foam plug with the vent straw mod for carts. Both have made vaping a joy. The other thing was sampling enough ejuices to find the ones that you know you could vape for eternity. That was likely the hardest and most expensive. Find someone who has the same take on a few ejuices - they are a good source for trying other stuff out and you can learn together. Just Julie and Elendil were instrumental in forming my current palate. I'm pretty sure I've returned the favor to Julie on a few flavors.

My first big mistake was getting an auto 901. The 901 itself is great...if it is a manual. I swear I must have went thru 15 batteries the first month by flooding my auto batteries. I was filling carts too full plus adding a couple of drops to the atty every time I topped off. Someone, still don't know who, paid for a Nerf PT for me. At the time money was a huge issue. I still owe that person for saving me from myself! Anyway, once I found out about manual batteries it was smooth sailing.

Someone once posted that you shouldn't do a review or make up your mind about a new ecig until you've had it at least a week. That was some of the best advice ever given on here. I HATED my 510 when I first got it. Now it is a big part of my vaping arsenal. Don't be too quick to make up your mind about something new.

My first mistake was not buying enough juice and spare parts. The problem though, even tho I recommend all newbies to get a lot of juice, is its a big outlay for something you might not even like/get on with. The spare attys I really didn't need immediately until I got a juice that was highly flavored and left me with only one atty to play around with.
Carts: I vape pretty hard n fast. Ive tried doing it more slowly and its really beyond me. I vape like I drink through a straw when I'm super thirsty. Pretty much exactly like it in fact. The carts can't keep up, no wicking material on earth (I have decided) is going to be able to keep up with me. I smoked this way as well but filters didnt have an issue.
I wish I'd dripped from the start and stopped fussing about with cart fillings.
Even blue foam can't keep up supply n demand.

Flavorings: Ok this is going to sound a bit odd lol I love my sweet vapes - Ive found I can vape most any flavor, unless its too fake tasting, and get something out of it. I never wanted anything like an analog but Im starting to think I ought to go the tobacco route (taste wise) because my PV is welded to my face more often than not and I don't think thats a good thing in the long run.
At weekends I would chain smoke at the PC, so chain vaping at weekends isnt a problem but it is at other times.
I don't want to 'abuse' this new habit and have it become an issue. Someone in another thread mentioned something similar to this and it struck home. I'm almost it enjoying it TOO much, and every single vape is nice. With cigs it was maybe 5 of 20 I smoked I really kicked back on (the rest were habit) and vaping was supposed to be an alternative to smoking. But its turned into an almost all day thing to do.
I think I went off topic there slightly so Ill pull it back

So, flavorings: Im still trying new ones, although Ive found lots I enjoy. Apart from buying at least one other from a different vendor at the time I got my 510 there's not really anything I'd change about my journey there.

This forum: I found you guys before I did ANYTHING and thank god for you all! Saved me dollars and anguish aplenty. Perhaps thats why I have so few regrets about things I could've done better from day 1.

My biggest learning curve was learning how to cut and mix juice. I started doing so day one with 24mg, VG and water. Too much of the H2O made everything thin and runny; it leaked out the threads, it pooled in and flooded the atty every other drag. After three weeks or so i finally figured it out and re-mixed my existing batch by adding a crapload of juice and VG to make it thicker (comparing to the regular juice). Now it (my 510s) work perfect; thankfully I got it all down before my TV order came in. Half-strength macchiato is heavenly!

I made a few mistakes (and am new, so bound to make plenty more). Even after finding this forum and spending a good deal of time online trying to find my first model.....I ordered a super mini . It sounded like a good deal at the time, what with all the carts that came with it and the PCC and all. But it wasn't.

I was stuck on the idea that I needed something the same size as a cigarette, that had a little light at the end to simulate the embers, and that it had to have an auto batt so I'd be taking real drags instead of messing with buttons. I don't know if I could, by going back and talking to "me before placing the order", convince that guy to have done differently. That what he really wanted was something without a light on the end, with a big ol' battery to last all day, and with a button so he wouldn't get juice in his battery and have better control. "Juice?" He'd ask, "I'm just gonna order the pre-filled carts so I can switch them like I switch cigarettes. You keep your juice and your button."

Of course then I got the oh, so cool looking little gadget. And the teeny tiny carts lasted no time at all, didn't wick but 1/2 the liquid, and it was battery dance at tap dancing footwork pace. Using the auto batt to keep power running to the atty was as frustrating as trying to bail out a boat with thimble and saran wrap. So, I moved up a step and got a manual 510. This solved the tiny cart problem and the auto batt problem. But, though the battery dance may have slowed to tango, it was no bolero.

Enter the eGo/Tornado. Long-lasting battery, still looks s...., all problems solved. Maybe one day I'll move up to a more mod-looking mod so the batteries last 2 days and I can hit HV...but this works, well, for now.

Like a lot of you, I should have taken the "plunge" (oh, so shallow it seems now) into getting a PV that's not so much like a cigarette. Carts, well turns out the easiest solution was the simplest - less polyfill. Upon suggestion in highping's thread, just use a little polyfill as a plug and good to go.

Those are the only hiccups I've really had along the way. Why? Because of ECF. This has been said above, but it bears repeating what a wonderful resource this place is...it can prepare you for so much. Once I got it into my thick skull to listen to what people posted here (after my disappointment with the first unit), I read and read and read before I posted once and it has certainly made the path a much easier one to tred.

I don't know what to say.....I heard about electronic cigarettes so I went to google and typed the words in....I found this forum and read for a while....then I ordered a manual Joye 510 and when it arrived I enjoyed my first drag and have been happy ever since.....

that being said, thank you all for suffering through the problems, solving them and telling me about them here.....

I owe you a debt of gratitude....

I am a research bug. I research everything to the tiniest detail before I purchase something. Just like carthead, I had a good experience with my first PV, joy 510. However, I do have a story.

So I decided after having started creating my own e-Juice that I would try Menthol!! :)

I found the perfect post but on the day my menthol arrived I lost it. So I thought, I remember well enough. I used one of my extra dropper bottles, filled it with a quarter of VG heated it up till it was warm to the touch. Then I started adding menthol. Unbelievably I thought, this stuff dilutes so easily!! I kept adding until I began having flashbacks of Organic Chem discussions on super saturated liquids. Needless to say, I have a solid dropper bottle of Menthol.

LOL

i often heard about it in the radio and news, but never really crossed my mind it would work for me. One day at shopping mall ran in to a guy that was selling so called E-lite Elight. The cold Chicago winter was just around the corner and going out to smoke every 30 minutes its not very enjoyable in freezing windy city, besides paying $8 a pack was another pain. So i got my first ecig and was $120 and did nothing to me at all, good throat hit but very little to no vapor. I found my self with $120 short in my bank account and still smoking in Chicago`s freezing cold. Then i found a video in youtube made by TGWTF A.K.A moobyghost doing a review of 510 and jumped out of my chair screaming that's what i need, i was amazed by vapor production on that thing, got online and ordered one, 2 days later i even took off from work waiting on the mail to arrive and sure enough it was what TGWTF described and much much more. I hit few bumps along the way and still do (burning atty`s weekly) I follow TGWTF youtube channel and efc forums daily and took some fantastic tips from some of you. Now i have been smoke free for 2 months and i no longer go out to smoke. I still use my very 1st 510 and i use Tobacco/Menthol with %20 VG from Tasty Vapor which is ababsolutely amazing. Life is good in Chicago`s winter when you don`t have to go out to smoke ;) so thanks EFC and TGWTF for introducingme to wonderful world of vaping...

Since I seem to be the odd ball and pretty much did everything backwards, I thought I would add my 2c's worth in case there is anyone else out there who thinks there is only one way to go.

I started out with a very old version of a two piece. I cannot discover what it is exactly, although its just a 901 batt with a carto that fits. It has absolutely no vapor production, but a strong TH and good flavor along with easy filled cartos.

That was back in February last year, I got it and charged it and started on the 1st of March. It was enough to stop me smoking entirely by sometime around the second week of that month, although since I could not remember exactly when I stopped I set my counter for April, partly because every few days or so I would light up a cigarette to make sure I really did not want to smoke (it just seemed too easy) confirmed I did NOT and put it out after 2 puffs. Still use that old two piece as a stealth vape every now and then, its become my "going to the movies" vape but for the rest of the time I like some vapor.

Changed to a 901 which was pretty good, and the flavor was really good, but I kind of wanted more so I headed for an 801 pen style. Lots of vapor but the flavor was really poor. I also had to learn not to flood the attys, which was my biggest problem, and also to stay hydrated.

Right about then, less than a month into it, I started DIYing nicquid. No idea that process had a name because I was not involved with any groups yet, it just made sense to me to mess around with it, especially as I could not for the life of me get a good flavor from the 801.

Still was not quite happy so I got the Prodigy and hated every minute of it. Did not like the flavor, feel, the weight, the heat, the look..nothing about it was pleasant for me (no haters please it would be a miserable world if we were all the same).

Sold that, got a 510..and again, thought it was a fussy little non event. Didn't hate it, but it left me kind of ..meh. I picked up a few of the m series when I found them on special and really quite liked those little things..again I occasionally still use one, but the rest I have given to people who wanted to try an ecig.

As they came on the market, I bought two VP mods, one 901 and one 801.

By now, for me at least, I was strongly pulled to the 901 for the flavor. Nothing else seemed to let the flavor shine the way the 901 did, but the TH and vapor production still fell short of what I felt I really wanted, so I was still falling back on the 801 for that, especially in the evenings.

The 10440 batts were better than the original ecigs in terms of punch and longevity, and I knew I did not like HV on so many levels, so I went along with the laser mods fairly happily for a good 2 or 3 months but they still fell a little short for me, although I don't think I could have said exactly what it was I was looking for, and seriously thought for a while it might be that "full spectrum of alkaloids" that others find they miss. It wasn't.

By now though I was a pretty competent mad chemist when it came to juice, and had tried lots of ready made juices as well as experimenting with PG VG and many combinations of the two.

I felt a lot like Goldilocks with the porridge at this point. I had narrowed down my preferences to those two attys, but was missing the "just right" part. I was also pretty motivated to find one set up I liked so I could start stock piling in case of a ban, and its a lot cheaper and more efficient to stockpile for just one type of device.

Then, somewhere around the fall of the year, I joined this group and discovered the Nico Stick box mod. Lol I never soldered a day in my life, so first I bought one someone else had made, and found that this was exactly what I was looking for.

The difference in the 14500 from the 10440 batts was phenomenal. I got the 901 atty with its full round delivery of flavor, but I also got the increased vapor production and the slight heating of the vapor to a gentle warmth that felt right (see..Goldilocks, not too hot and not too cold) and I also found that I could draw on it while letting some of the vapor gently "escape" around the edges while I drew, which was how I used to draw on a cigarette, so that was just an extra little bonus.

So I studied the "how to" endlessly, followed with my fingers how it was done on the one I had, and finally took the plunge, bought the bits and pieces and made my own. In fact I made about 10 of them! I have played with decorating them, read up on safety issues and sealed parts in epoxy, given a couple to friends, and generally had a lot of fun with them.

I had by now also worked out exactly what niquids I liked, and have settled on just 2, an Anise/black licorice and a cappuccino. I vape the Anise 90% of the time and the Cappuccino the other 10%. I make these both up at 6%, a few at 0% and have a tiny 5ml bottle of 36mg that I keep by me to add a couple of drops for those times when I feel I need an extra nic kick. If I know I am going to be chain vaping, I reach for 0%

Once I found the combination I liked I stopped experimenting, just as once I found the brand of cigarettes I liked, I stopped trying out others.

Again my experience, (different from many others), is that I found the 801 attys died like flies (and I have tried most of them out there) but in the year since I started I have only lost one 901 atty. In both cases I rotated
through about 6 attys all the time, and I burn then off rather than any other form of cleaning.

Probably a lot less exciting than most people's journeys but it worked for me :)

I did a lot of homework going in, mostly via YouTube and this forum, and (IMHO) saved myself a lot of time and money through the pre-purchase decision that I didn't want/expect to exactly replicate the experience of smoking cigarettes.

Started with the manual Joye 510 and quickly picked up a passthrough, which was probably my single best investment as I spend a lot of time at my laptop.

Persisted with cartridges/dripping into cartridges for about a month and then got sick of inconsistent draws, etc. so switched to direct dripping onto the atomizer, which resolved all those issues.

Recently purchased two megabatteries for the 510 because I'm about to go off on a six-week trip and won't have as much time at the computer as I usually do.

The upshot is that I completely quit cigarettes within a couple of weeks and now don't care if I never smoke again. AT THE SAME TIME, I would not beat myself up or consider it a "failure" if I did have a cigarette in some sort of emergency scenario; I doubt that I'd enjoy it much, but whatever, I'd do it if I had to and look forward to my next vape. I honestly think that this attitude has made "quitting" much, much easier for me.

I started with Njoy/Npro and found this Forum and the Joye 510 and the 901. I've stuck with the 510 as my backup but eventually got the dream machines, the Little Chuck and the Super-T Six. Those are awesome.

Super-T makes the brass and steel Tips (mouthpiece) for dripping. No taking off the mouthpiece any more, just 3 drops in the hole of the Tip gives me up to 30 hits with great vapor.

As for juice, Mint/Menthol is good, and the Pear Lung, but I've yet to find that perfect flavor. Those'll do for now. I'm just so thankful I found the ecig and this forum that's been soooo helpful!
