Hi guys. Been vaping and making my own coils/juice for a few years now. I have a Mutation X that I mostly use. Anyway, when I was buying a new battery a while back, it came with some tank that had a temp controlled coil in it and I tried it out and I was blown away. I want to try making my own. The battery it came with has since crapped out.

So, mainly, I'm in the market for a new battery. Obviously it has to be compatible with variable temp, but I really hate messing with 18650's or otherwise. Anyone know of a good battery that you can charge via usb cable that's variable temp, decent price, durable, with a fairly high mah capacity and wattage? Every new buy I make I feel I have to go through a week of research to catch up on the tech. :/

I think that's all I really need, but figured you guys would know better. Would the Mutation have problems for any reason with nickel var. temp coils or anything else I should know? I'm not too much of a sub ohmer - honestly I usually just go for about .5 ohms and run at 20 watts. Might change with these new coils.. Any reason to look into buying titanium wire instead? I'd appreciate any tips or advice I could get.

*edit* Also, forgive me if this isn't the proper board for this. I'm actually not sure if I can post to anything other than the new members forum yet. I've been registered on here for a long time but very rarely post.

So you want a TC mod with an internal battery and does not use 18650's or other removable batteries? Your choices are fairly limited as it seems that all the manufacturers are coming out with mods using 18650's. The only ones that come to mind is the old Joyetech evic VT, which only supported temp control with Ni and Ti wire. That one has an internal 5000 mah LiPo battery pack and it DOES NOT support upgradeable firmware. Something newer would be pretty much any DNA200 mod. Upgradeable firmware, and uses LiPo battery packs. Depending on the manufacturer of the mod, it may or may not support replacing the LiPo battery. Only the Reuleaux DNA200 uses the Evolv DNA200 chip but it is powered by three 18650 batteries.

As for your other question regarding using Ni or Ti wire in RDA's, one thing to keep in mind, especially with Ni wire, is that the resistance of the wire is so low, you need a pretty wide build deck if you want to use Ni coils in an RDA because of size of the coils. You will pretty much be limited to using a RDA with Velocity-style posts, especially if you want to use dual coils. When I started using RDA's I was using it with first Ni wire, and then Ti wire. Eventually I stopped using TC coils in RDA's because over time, the coils get gunked up, much faster than when you have a TC coil in a tank. Since you can't dry burn TC coils to clean them, they are a big pain in the rear to clean. The coils would gunk up after a day and a half or two days of use, and then I would need to carefully sit there with a metal dental pick trying to scrape away the caramelized juice on the coils. This is why on drippers, I switched back to using kanthal. Whenever I rewick the coils, I can simply just dry burn the coil to clean it which literally takes me seconds. I have kanthal coils in drippers that I have been reusing for months. Nowadays, the "hot" new TC wire is SS, which can be used either in TC mode (if the mod supports SS TC or supports an adjustable TCR) or in power mode. SS wire can be dry burned, although you don't want to overheat the coils too much as that will weaken the coil.

That sounds like you had your temperature set too low. My TC coils last significantly longer than the kanthal ones ever did. I'll usually go a month or more between coil changes. What temperature setting were you using? 425F or lower?

My temp is typically set anywhere from 450 to 500 degrees, with 480 being the most commonly used setting.

You want to try making your own battery?

That sounds like one of the fixed battery mods like an istick40;
make sure to get a mod that can take a variety of coil materials.

No.

there are concerns about dryburning both nickel and titanium, so I would suggest you be sure to get some stainless steel.

*Apparently, the following that I typed up last night, I never actually pressed 'reply'. My bad*

Thank you for all of the info!

You know, I'd completely forgotten about dry burning kanthal to clean. I've just been rebuilding after a week. :/

I seem to have better luck with coil life in tanks too; just in general. Any idea why that would be? Constant saturation, maybe? It'd be nice to find a way to imitate that.

Never heard of stainless steel as a coil. As I said, I don't keep up too well on vaping innovation when I'm not in the market. I'll definitely look into it.

I could handle 18650's if I had to. I'm liking the Reuleaux DNA200 a lot and it seems you can charge via usb as well! Thanks for the recommendation.

Edyle: No, lol. Making my own TC compatible coils*. And I'll look into the iSticks. How exactly can you tell what materials batteries are compatible with? The Reuleaux site: "Reuleaux requires a heating coil made from Nickel 200 or other materials with a well-defined temperature coefficient of resistance, rather than Nickel Chromium or Kanthal alloys when using in TC mode.". No idea what exactly 'well defined temp coefficient of resistance' means. I'm assuming titanium and ss would fit in that category?

Thank you guys for the advice.

Thank you guys for the advice.

Many vapers, in response to the FDA's deeming regulations, have been asking for 18650 powered devices. Their hopes are to extend the useful life of their APVs if obtaining new ones becomes difficult of ridiculously expensive.

Nickel, Titanium, Stainless and Nickel-Iron (NiFe) wires seem to be the choice for their TCR properties.

Good luck!
