Hi everyone.
I'm now starting to do my own DIY mixes. I'm using sub ohm prebuilt coils for my tank. The problem I seem to be having is that when I'm testing new mixes, and those mixes turn out to be bad, I end up wasting a coil in the process.
Is there a technique you use to save my coil usage, while still being able to test out new mixes? Knowing about the USPS mail ban coming soon, I want to use my coils sparingly.

I'd look into a simple rebuildable atomizer to where you only need to change the wick.

I agree with Smacuser's advice. You can buy a dripper atomizer or a rebuildable atomizer and test your juices. After each juice test you can pull the wick out of the atomizer and replace it. I use the same cotton that people use for facial cleansing. A box of cotton from Walmart or the grocery store will work fine and last you a year or two, depending on how often you pull and replace with a fresh cotton wick.

I've been using the same box of cotton for 2 or 3 years rewicking my Kayfun atties and I'll probably get another year or more out of that box. You just pull a section from the cotton, stretch it and twist to make a wick that fits snugly in your coil. Juice it up and vape. You can pull an old wick, dry burn the coil until the coil turns red and immediately run it under the faucet to wash and cool the coil, then install a new wick.

In normal use I can vape for a week or so before having to change the wick in my Kayfun atomizers.

I'm going to say you'll be spending prebuilts and not really getting a true taste of your juice after a couple of uses. There are prewrapped coils you can buy pretty cheap and not feel bad about chucking after practicing on them.

Only other thing I can think of is getting a few bridgeless 510 atomizers where you can just rinse them, if they're still available.

Out of curiosity, are there any RDA atomizers that accommodate prebuilt coils?

That would defeat the purpose of an RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer).

The whole point of an RDA in general is that you can drip onto the coil/wick. You can't really do that with a factory coil head. On some you can, but then changing the cotton is a real pain and many times not even possible.

And in your case, the point of the RDA would be so that you do not waste a factory coil when testing new juices.

Put a factory coil in an RDA and the whole concept of an RDA is completely lost and useless on all fronts.

I just remember at one point using an RDA and having a hard time wrapping my own coils.

You can buy pre-wrapped coils. If you want simple coils, you'll have to buy those from china. If you want specialty coils like claptons and the like then you can get those in the USA. I don't know of any retailers that sell simple coils in the USA.

If you want links to simple coils from China that you can buy, reply with the resistance you want and I'll give you some links.

However, unless you have a medical condition that disallowed you from wrapping a coil, just a little practice and you'll get the hang of it. You're just making a coil.

Right now, I am using the geekvape aero mesh sub ohm tank with 0.15 resistant prebuilt coils. A while ago, I purchased a vapejoy rta 24 tank. I then purchased some 0.17 wire from kanthal I believe. I just remember having a hard time wrapping the wire myself and getting it so that the cotton would not burn to a crisp on first try. I guess I would prefer to purchase a simple single coil RTA that take a prebuilt wrapped wire.
Sorry for the dumb questions. I'm kinda new to this

My guess is that you put too much cotton in the coil (too tight).

They will all take a pre-wrapped wire (I mean unless it's a mesh tank, but let's not go there lol). But the problem with an RTA is that you have to fill it part way with juice and RTAs can be more of a hassle when you consider all you want to do is to be able to test recipes without much cost.

I suppose you could try to use an RTA as an RDA, but cheap RDAs are, well, cheap. You don't need anything fancy or expensive if all you're using it for is to test recipes.

If you can build an RTA then you can build an RDA and it will be actually be easier. And RTA is fussy because the wick's tails have to be near perfectly positioned. Not the case for an RDA.

If building coils isn't an option for whatever reason, you can also try vaping a tank (or half a tank) of unflavoured juice to flush out the coil between tests. Just empty out the unsuccessful trial juice, rinse the tank, add some unflavoured and vape away. How well it works will depend on how strong the failed juice was, but it could be worth a try.

I would grab some RDA's and prebuilt coils (if you don't want to wrap you own) and call it a day.

RDA's are very easy to coil and wick. Some RTA's can be "fussy" with wicking.

Note: If you vape using temp control you can use SS316L coils (or another TC wire) and vape your wick dry without burning the wick. You cannot vape the cotton dry in simple wattage mode without frying the wick.

Does your mod have tc options? If so use ss mesh coils if available.

    Hadaly RDA $6.05

    Prewound 0.32ohm SS Coils $3.47

Ordering from china, delivery takes a while and with Chinese New Year coming soon it may take a couple weeks longer than normal for delivery. You might be looking at as much as 6-8 weeks for delivery.

If you never bought from Fasttech before, you can create and account and then send them a support ticket message to get a new customer discount code using the following link

Just realize that since that RDA takes a coil with opposing legs and the coils above have legs facing the same direction, you will need to unwrap one leg half way (this will drop the resistance a little bit). You can just use a coil winding rod or a drill bit.

I think those coils I linked to have a 3mm inner diameter but I did not calculate it. Just put the coil on the jig or drill bit and pull on one of the legs slightly to unwrap it half way until the legs are facing opposite directions.

    Coil Winding Rod $2.13
