That burning taste

First and foremost, I just received my first Prodigy E-cig (lovin' it!)
That said, I'm aware that it has more power than what I'm used to, when compared to my old DSE-901.

I'm also aware that my batteries were very old (3-6 months) and that the vapor that I've been used to for a while was, well, bleek at most (still stayed away from analogs though!) I've also used the same atomizer for about 3-4 weeks (which I know is about the end of it's life for most users).

However, since I've received my new Prodigy, I've been using a LOT more juice than I usually do. That's probably normal though, more power, more "smoke", equals more juice, right?

The question is, is it normal to put 2 drops in your cartridge, have about 5-7 drags off of it, and then start getting that very harsh "burning plastic / rubber" taste after that?

I have a feeling that I just need to clean my atomizer, or switch to the new one that came with my prodigy, and retire my old one, but since the old atty is producing so well, I figure that it's still ok. Maybe it's not though.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else uses that much liquid, and wondering if they have to refill so often in order to avoid that harsh taste.

Other than that, all I have is mad props to Steve and Casey for creating this thing, because it's making me fall in love with e-smoking all over again. Really, it is! It's just so nice to have a failing battery (only one left), and an old atty, to going to this. It's like two different worlds.

I just hope that in the future we can get a smaller, more portable version that is just as powerful and reliable. I guess they can't re-invent the battery (Li-Ion is pretty nice to begin with) but maybe something. Maybe I'll peruse the modder's forum and get my technical brain to think of something better. I'll let you know if I have any bright ideas.

I figured going in that I would have a bad taste for a day or two, because of whatever it is that they coat these new atty's with, until it was burned away.

That being said, I started vap'n this little beauty toward the middle of the day today. Very little vapor and the taste was, yuck. As the afternoon progressed so did the vapor and the taste. This evening, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to find a cart I can use with this, 801, that won't melt... so have been dripping. The vapor is now a smoke machine. I could create the fog necessary to film an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with this prodigy.

Do get yourself a new atty. Do give yourself the time to smoke off the bad stuff from the new atty. Do relax and enjoy this terrific device. Oh, btw, lower the level of nic. A LOT!!!! Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just need to drip and drip more than you are used to. At the slightest taste of burnt stuff stop and drop a few on it. Don't be scared because if you run it dry it will blow the atomizer. Watch igetcha on the video reviews and listen to him. He uses 5 or 6 drops on his 901. And for the 801 it is probably more. I have been dripping all day and have not flooded it yet. It is normal to use a lot more juice with the high powered devices. After about three or four puffs you need a drop or two. Especially if you are not giving it a break like we do on the first few days of use. New toy syndrome. I filled a cart and take a puff or two and set it down for 15 20 minutes then hit it again. When I was just puffing and puffing I got to that burnt taste quick. Like after 4 or 5 puffs. This is normal from what I have read and seen. Just don't be scared to juice it up or you will blow through some atomizers.

I think my juice intake has doubled since I got my prodigy, but I've cut my nic in half. So, it's a wash for me. You may be running too dry, I don't get anywhere near 5 to 7 drags off 2 drops with my 901, but everybody vapes a little different.

I was getting a harsh burn taste after only a puff or two. I pulled off the cart and watched the atty glow like a bonfire each time I pressed the button. Turns out (through some troubleshooting with Casey) that my switch resistor was touching the side of the casing. Once I tweaked it away from the side it stopped glowing and now I get a nice drag. Yummy!

So check to see if your atty is overheating and definitely try a new atty. I knew I shouldn't have had that burning taste.

Steve and I have posted several times on this forum that using cartridges is just not recommended in the Prodigy. The unit runs so warm that you will get that burning taste either because the cartridge is dry or melting. 8-o

Hey Lucky,

The PT is slightly different because generally you're not running the full 5v that it's capable of just because of the USB power source that you're connecting it to. I'd recommend dripping on both devices just to play it safe and get the experience we're talking about all over the forums and in the videos.

Old ones are the best if handled right. If your carts are turning brownish, you have old juice built up in the atomizer. stuff a twisted tissure in it and blow as much out as you can get. Add 4 or 5 drops of fresh liquid on the atomizer and blow it out again. This gets rid of the old burnt juice in the atomizer. It also works to get rid of the primer in new atomizers. If it gets hard to draw, you likly have fluid between the atomizer and the thread portion of the atomizer. There are two pieced in there with a bit of space between them. Once that space fills with juice, the air holes clog. Blow out the excess juice as before with a tissue, then set the atomizer upright on a piece of paper. Every few minutes, blow into the battery end and set it back onto the paper. You will know when the trapped juice is released as there will be a quarter sized juice stain around the atomizer. Once the excess juice drains, the atomizer will draw like new. I never boil, soak or do anything else to an atomizer and they last a month or more. Only had one die using the PV1 and it was over a month old before I got the PV1.

Here is a trick for carts. If you find yourself constantly having to top one off, siphon out all the old juice with an eye dropper and refill it. Old juice thickens up some and stays at the bottom of the cart. You will have to shift the filling around some with a paper clip as the eye dropper will leave a hole. Then refill the cart. A cart can easily last a month or more. I vape heavily and my carts wick 10 to 12 drops out before they need refilling, and they stay white because I clean the old juice out of the atomizer ocasionally.

Thanks, that was what I was wondering if juice collects under the pot in the sump.. I was looking at a blow up of the insides of the e-cig last night and it dawned on me that the juice has to go somewhere. It gets trapped under the pot and goes stale. It turned a cart brown today and had to pitch it and start dripping. I was at work and had no way to remedy the situation. I am going to try this blow and set trick tonight... Thanks again...this is good info..

Casey, thanks for the info, and I'm sorry for not searching around before posting this. When I'm at work or in the car though, I can't drip. I've tried it (only after receiving the Prodigy) but it doesn't last long enough. I'll give it another shot, but I like the idea of not having to pick up my liquid bottle every couple of minutes. I do understand if it's just not made that way.

I see your point Brian and thanks for the tips. I do some of those things myself, just from experience from use. To let you know, my new atty is brownish in color all ready. I've blown it out, but I'm starting to think it's actually the cartridge that's burning, so I have a feeling it's more of a cartridge filler problem, more than an atty problem. I've been rotating it (flipping it upside down), and it seems to give a little bit more time before "burning tatstes". Sometimes the polyester or whatever "fill" of the cartridge gets stuck to the atty, and they definitely makes the burning taste come back again.

To anyone that has that problem, it might be a good idea to flip the cartridge filling upside-down, or use a new cartridge filling.

By the way, did your guys (puresmoker) stop selling cartridges? The last time that I checked, I didn't see them on the website. Previously when you were selling DSE's, I purchased a bunch of blank carts, but I'll soon run out. I've also noticed that the cart has changed shape, and thickness since a little before the prodigy started shipping. I like the new design (only one air hole, and more room for the cart) but I don't see where I can buy more when mine gets "straggly" and burnt. Any update on when we'll see replacements on sale?

And why doesn't the prodigy come with a cart filler installed, instead of a blank mouth piece? Is that so you can promote dripping?

(not intended to be rude in any way) Don't you think some of this information, including the info on many other threads about the prodigy would be good to put on your main website?

I knew of this website almost before I ever found out about you guys, but the people that I keep telling about puresmoker.com might not have a clue about this forum, and they might have some generic questions that still aren't answered on your website yet.

Such things like, do I need to replace the resistor on m Prodigy 901 style if I buy the 801 adapter with an 801 atty, or at least a link to this site from your page so that customers can read up on things a bit.

Actually, a forum for your website might even be better, run for and by puresmoker.com. Like, http://forum.puresmoker.com or puresmoker.com/forum. I know you guys can probably figure out how to setup your own sites, but I have experience in doing so (I have my own forum, and have setup a few for others in the past) and it's quite simple. I could help out if needed. A blog or something would help too. Just to post recent information, tips, FAQ's etc. on.

i have had my prodigy for a week now and i like everything about it.but i keep getting a nasty after taste not the burnt taste.is that common with the higher volts.

If you don't blow it out very often you will get that burnt juice trapped in there and it can give you that taste often and it is hard to get rid of. Some people will steam clean their atomizers over a tea pot and it has worked for me a few times but you never seem to get it all out of there. There really needs to be a solution that you can soak these things in to clean them out real good. Something that will remove deposits from the coil. Certain flavors can burn on there and stay for a long time.
