I am not a MBV fan either .. though I wanted to be :( I still haven't found someone that I am like WOW THIS IS AWESOME. TBH, I found that wow factor when I started making my own juice. I have about 3-4 ADVs from DIY and none from vendors. My Tiger's Blood, Strawnana, Moon Cookie clone are really good and are my go to ADVs. I also made a Custardy juice that is fantastic as well.

But i am still wondering what "that taste" is. I wonder if it just cheap nic they may be using

MBV just doesn't compare to a quality juice like ones made by Ahlusion, GLV, Seduce, TVC, etc. They're just on different levels. MBV plays its part - it has a wide selection with really affordable prices. Of course it has a large following! So does McDonald's. But that doesn't mean McDonald's is comparable to a 5 star restaurant.

Could "that taste" be ethyl maltol? I noticed that one of the flavors mentioned was Cotton Candy, and I've heard that ethyl maltol tastes like cotton candy, but some apparently use it just as a sweetener.

I personally don't care for the -ol type of sweeteners, sorbitol, xylitol... they taste extremely artificial to me -- it's what is in that topical anesthetic stuff that a dentist rubs on your gum pre-novocaine shot. Frankly I'd rather suffer a few moments of pain than have that taste in my mouth for hours. Nasty!

Ironically made with the very same flavorings as "expensive, gourmet juice" ;)

I second Andrias guess on Ethyl Maltol. I'm no big fan either.
That is certainly not the case with Ahlusion. They extract their own flavorings.

I'll use the McDonald's example again. A fry cook at McDonald's could not do what a chef at a 5 star restaurant could do, even if they were both given the same ingredients.

I asked MBV if they used ethyl maltol in their banana split or cookie blaster and they said no .

No its not

I may have been a bit off target. It's just that some of this "high end juice" and "gourmet juice" sort of ticks me off. The only real requirements for making such juices is being able to spell 'gourmet' and 'quality'.

If they taste great to you and you don't mind paying the higher price - good on you.

That's not the only "requirement". All mt baker does is give you specific flavors. Apple, mango, cinnamon roll, pineapple, poptart, whatever. Premium companies give you juice they slave over and combine different flavors and ratios to get the right combination.

Look if you can't taste the difference idk what to tell you. Vape what you want but don't down someone because they like the finer things.

That's what ticks me off. The snobbery. There are good liquids and there are bad liquids. Which is 100% subjective. I just don't buy into the idea that any e-liquid qualify as 'finer things'.

Probably cause it's cheap, low quality juice.

Idk what to tell you man. You go to mickey d's, you get a mcdouble. You go to outback, you get a ribeye. Theyre both personal preference.

While i can agree that snobbery is rampant in this hobby, (clone vs authentic comes to mind), liquids are the one thing that I don't mind being snobbish about. Food is one thing that I can be a bit snobbish about in life because life is too short to eat crap. Much like food, E liquid is all about the taste for me, so I am pretty darn picky about it. That being said, I'm also a broke tightwad, so just like with fine food, I have started learning to make my own as I cant justify paying $1 per ml.

It could be the switch over to butyl acids that is so popular in sweeteners right now. When companies move away from diactyl (the buttery flavor in your buttery juices listed) they use butyl acids to replace the flavor with less documented health risks. People have commented that the flavor can sometimes taste pretty bad if they are sensitive to it. I don't know if that is the case here but it's something to think about with buttery sweet E-Liquid. Just two cents from your friendly neighborhood chemist.

you sound much more knowledgeable on the subject than I... I dunno if that is the case or not, but a plausible hypothesis nonetheless. Personally, I don't use any sweetener in my juices; I've never really found any reason to, and EM is the only one i've tried and I've ruined a few batches of juice that was already good by adding it, so I just stopped using it. As for the diacetyl issue, I use the heck outta some butter and custard flavors! I figure that over the years I've put alot more questionable chemicals into my body than this; after all, we live in the age of 'better living through chemistry' and are completely immersed in chemicals that are more than likely not good for our bodies.

^^^ agree completely. Also, I only buy clones. I will never spend that much money just to buy the real deal when a clone is just as good. Also I only vape 2 or 3 ml a day max. Some days I vape more but I can pay for the good stuff cause I don't vape 30 ml a day.

yep :) I started this hobby first to save money, secondly to save health. I buy clones almost exclusively..... I remember when i only vaped @3ml a day... now its more like 15-20 ml a day :/

I'll translate my views into coffee:

I love a great cup of freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee. What I don't care for is the oooh-ing and aaah-ing, lipsmacking and feelery that comes with it. More money does not necessarily buy you better coffee. Very little money, however, usually won't give a great cup of coffee.

It's tradition. It's craft. It's in the soil and in the season. E-liquid is flavorings. Some flavorings taste better than others. Some flavorings taste good with other flavorings. That's all there is to it, in my mind. It is a craft, but there is so much less magic involved than in things commonly associated with 'lifes finer things'.
