Here's another box mod ;)

I'm calling this one the ACDC - maybe pimp this one up, what do ya think of a picture of Angus on the back? :D

.

Incorporated BJ43's http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/battery-mods/220307-vvbox-vvpassthru.html in this mod. I had the DC power jacks from my http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/239196-coffin-vv-pt.html and just needed a DPDT switch. :thumb: BJ43 :thumb:

The box is a bit larger than I'd like; but I'm getting quite used to it :vapor:

Parts:

100mmx60mmx25mm project box ($2.37)
This LM2596 buck module from eBay ($4.25)
eBay switch ($0.60)
2.1mm DC Power Jack ($0.80)
RadioShack DPDT micromini toggle switch ($3.99)
Atty connector ($0.99)
2 14500 900mAh batteries

Parts Pics (forgot to include the toggle switch)

The Innerds - the toggle switch selects between battery power and AC adapter power (no onboard charging)

Smooth box. If that toggle isn't too permanently attached you could move it over some and cut a slit so just the tip sticks out and so it can be switched from the outside. I also like that it doubles as a master switch provided it isn't plugged in.

I was looking at RS slide DPDT switches; but anything rated over 0.3A was a bit large; so I went with this 'micromini' toggle. I thought about making a slit and having the toggle stick out, but had decided to keep the pot adjustment internal, so I kept the toggle internal as well. Plus that meant one less place for me to screw it up :D.

Yeah, the DPDT switch does serve as master switch also; this was BJ43's concept with his VVBox/VVPassthrough. Although the rocker switch BJ used is an ON/OFF/ON three position switch, so that is a true master switch.

Thanks Q! I still have another one of these boxes and some 18650s and a couple of voltage displays coming and....

Ya Ya, I here ya...the "what can I build next" syndrome is alive and well in my shop as well...you like those buck cct's eh?, I may have to order a couple to play with...I've been building with the OKR T 6's lately and I'm lovin' them, I mean you have to perfboard them but you can add so many gizmos like on board LED's and zener low voltage cut outs, tact switches on the trigger, etc...I wonder if there's any "real world" difference in efficiency between the two cct's though? have you tried any? I guess it's just what you're used to modding with...oh one more thing...been looking at an "LCD" readout instead of the traditional "LED"...seems you need an external batt to run them but a button style 5v batt is easy to bury and should last a while, especially if you have a switch to activate...thoughts?

With the passthrough capability, which I used often yesterday and last evening, not sure of the battery life in this mod. Same set of 14500s I first put in yesterday are still reading 3.8V this morning. Guess I should pop in another set and check battery run time.

Overall first impressions:
This is much closer to my ideal set up ;). Like I said before, the box is a bit larger than I'd like; but it's not too big. Next mod will have external access to adjustments ;).
While I have spent a fair portion of this 'testing window' plugged in; I'm still surprised that the batteries are holding up so well.
I'm not sure of the size of the pot on this particular module; but I was hoping for more of a fine tuning capability than it actually has. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised with the large input/output ranges claimed.

Now where did I put that 1x2x4 RS box......

Clean box there TC! :toast:

You have enough room there for two 18350's laying horizontal on the bottom if you want.

If you want a good slide switch this is what you want...its an epoxy sealed C&K 6A and the body is only 1/4" x 1/4" x 1/2" long...its an on-on switch but I just cut one leg off. Not cheap ($5@) but a solid and solid feeling switch.

I need a slide switch like that but on off on.. Neater than a toggle to select between Batt and PT and center off works as master switch.

Thanks Nico!

Would a SPDT switch work for switching between power supplies? If so, how would you run the neg leads? Just run both negatives to the modules neg In? Would simplify things a bit :D
Would having the battery neg seeing the circuit cause problems when using the AC adapter?

:D my normal state of mind
