It has been weighing on my mind lately, the different attitudes that people have toward vaping in public. So I though I might start a thread about it. And here I am.

1st we have 4 basic types of "public" vapors.

1. The polite vapor
2. The stealth vapor
3. The rude vapor
4. The scared vapor (doesn't like to vape in public)

I am not saying that any one has to be any ONE definitive type of vapor. You may be a combination of types. But such is life... not everything is black and white.

So let's go over these different types.

1. The polite vapor. Confidently walks around vaping. Not making a big issue out of it. May even ask if vaping is allowed in premises. Stops vaping if asked not to "vape". Calmly has open honest conversations with people who might think they are smoking or worse. And always is polite about their vape, ie... not blowing huge clouds at people or creating issues.

2. The stealth vapor. Sneaks vapes (weather permitted or not)... and uses techniques as to not let of huge plumbs of vape and or none at all. Feels a need to hide the fact that they are vaping.

3. The rude vapor. Vapes openly and overconfidently. Does not ask permission. Argues rights about vaping. Makes a big scene when confronted.

4. The Scared vapor... again does not vape in public.

Now I see an issue with 2 of these. The stealth vapor is setting an example and behaviors that lend people to treating us more like it should not be allowed. Sneaky behavior is always associated with doing something wrong. If you are stealth vaping where it is NOT permitted... then that is a different story. Feel free to do what you wish, but always be able to accept the consequences if caught. Example... I sneak food into the movie theaters. Is is wrong/ against the rules... yes. Have I ever been caught>? No. But I am prepared to leave or get ride of the food and purchase something from the theater if I have to. It's about having responsibility.

The 2nd one I take issue with is the Rude vapor. If you act entitled and cause big scenes it gives us all a bad name. And if I were an owner and that is my first contact with a vapor I might just adopt a policy against vaping in or around my building. It's happened several times before where one bad apple will spoil it for everyone else.

Yes we have all heard when starting to vape that you can vape anywhere. That my have been one of vapings many appeals. But in the interest of making things better and easier for vapors, even more accepted; we should try to conduct ourselves with a general understanding and thoughtfulness toward others. Behavior as tho you have to hide something or worse are entitled is bad.

I have never had a bad encounter when vaping in public. Why? Because I don't act like I am doing anything wrong. And I am polite if anyone asks about it and or asks me to stop. For the record... I have never been asked not to vape. I have never even been asked "not to smoke that thing" and had to explain that I am not smoking. It may be because vaping is becoming more mainstream. But I also believe that it is all in you attitude and how you conduct yourself.

So please lets all keep these things in mind when we vape in public.

Common Sense ... Goes along ways :)

I vape everywhere ...
Of course, I don't blow clouds in a cop's face or on an airplane
:p

Very true! However... I find more and more of late, that common sense is indeed not that common. In fact common sense, logic and reasoning are dying skills. I have long suspected the intentional dumbing down of the population through media manipulation. Keep people dumb and slow and you can control them. Hell you can even make them believe something that is not in their benefit or best interest, is their idea!

I find that more and more people are quite content to be SHEEP. Docile, easily led, not willing to put any thought behind issues etc.. They have been called sheeple for a long time. They drive like sheep, they vote like sheep and they are sheered by big corporations like sheep, and one day will be led to slaugher like .... like what ? Yes you got it. Like SHEEP.

All part of THEIR "Grand Plan"

I laughed
Today ... It gives me the shivers
not wanting to think about what America will be in the near future

I'm a big fan of George Carlin (may he rest in peace) ...

Great post, I try to be a type 1 but can very quickly fall into the type 2 mode.
I want to be able to continue to vape in public, when it is reasonable and appropriate. So opening up a polite dialog, where feasible, is an opportunity to educate. Sometimes you run into a closed mind and there is little to do but be polite and reasonable. Obviously don't stand in doorways flagrantly blowing big plumes of vapor. If folks are familiar with you and may have spotted previously smoking you might even receive a few words of encouragement. I suspect that the type 3 vaper may be someone who feels forced into vaping and they take it out on others.
I went through some issues when being forced by management to ask smokers to move away from doorways. I work in the mental health field and people in the system tend to be the a large portion of the remaining smoking population. So reasoning with some of these, often angry, folks can be tough. You can't legally smoke on the sidewalks in the city where my site is located. I was asked to inform people of the change in the local law and wow did I have to listen to some griping. I quickly informed them I was just the messenger and not to kill me :D
I suspect the type 3 vaper is following a similar pattern. I agree we should be allowed to vape in public but being difficult can lead to new workplace rules and local laws being put into place. Be a type 1 and if necessary slip into type 2 mode when required.

Type-1 (Type-A) personality doesn't mean being out there drawing a lot of unnecessary attention
to yourself ... IE blowing clouds all the time ... I'm aware of my surroundings and know how
to stealth vape ... Doesn't mean I'm scared ... just means I'm using "common sense" based on
where and when thing.

I live in Philadelphia, in the city, and there is supposed to be no smoking within a certain amount of feet from a doorway. Realistically that would put smokers in the middle of the street on some blocks. A stupid law that is really not enforced. Not to mention all the people walking past all those doorways while smoking. It's mostly aimed at employees that work in the city so that they don't stand in the doorways on their smoke breaks. I think it's like 10'.

So, yea, there are laws out there that are asinine.
