I had a friend that felt the same way as you did. He told me when vaping in public he felt like an oddball and was further troubled by the fact about the controversy surrounding vaping. He began by vaping outdoors- in the backyard, next on the front porch, next in his car, next he'd have 1 last toot before he'd leave his car in a parking lot. He then began vaping in public away from people and now, 2 months later, has no problems vaping openly. He told me it was all about "baby steps" and convincing himself there was nothing wrong with what he was doing and that he wasn't an "oddball". The biggest breakthrough came when people actually asked him about the Ecig and were genuinely interested- many of those same people actually congratulated him on switching to vaping...he now looks forward to being approached in public.
Happy Vaping, Vapoor.

Edit: In regards to myself I never had that problem because I felt very strongly that it was all about my health. I've never had anyone approach me in a negative way about my vaping but have had lots of interest, positive input, and pats on the back.

As vaping and the sight of a PV in public is a VERY new concept to just about everyone on the planet, there are going to be times when someone might give a "strange" look or make a comment to you. Since the vaping community would like vaping to be seen in a much better "light" than smoking currently is, I try to remember that, be polite and responsive if someone has a question concerning what i am doing. Most of the time I get very favorable results especially if the person is a smoker.

One rule of thumb I follow is that if I'm speaking to a smoker I'll refer to the device as an e cig. They seem to relate to that term. If they are a non-smoker, it's a PV as they may get very uncomfortable if they hear the word "cig". I've sent many away with at least a mild interest and some have even written down (no smart phone) or checked ECF after a brief discusion.

i have only had one sorta negative response when vaping in public, and older lady had commented on how my "cigarette thingy" smell bothered her, I took the opportunity to educate her on what it really was, made a comparison to the coffee that she was holding, and asked her how she would feel if someone made the same style of comments about it. By the end of the conversation, she was interested in it for her older brother who had just been diagnosed with COPD,30+ year PAD smoker, she was going to check with their family doctor to see if it was ok for her to buy him one for Christmas.

This discussion has easily about 50 threads over the last year. Here is one of them:

When vaping is explaned intelligently to the uninformed, most view it in a very positive light. How vaping is perceived by the uninformed is based primarilly by how we who vape present it to the general public. If we present it as dangerous and something to be hidden, then that is how it will be perceived. If we vape openly but respectfully and are prepared to explain the many benefits of vaping to others, it will be preceived in a positive light.

Perception is reality.

Best to arm yourself with information and rehearse your response if confronted about your PV. As stated already, you're not doing anything wrong. Carry on as such. I don't blatantly go trying to cause a scene with my vapor. In some instances I even "stealth" vape so as to NOT have to go through the shpiel of my PV and cessation. Otherwise, if I'm shopping, or whatever, if I get the urge for some nic, I have at it. It's one of the biggest reasons I started vaping!

I only vape visibly where smoking is allowed or I stealth vape in bathrooms.

What is your exact problem? Do you have a problem vaping outside where smoking is allowed? Or are you talking about trying to vape inside businesses - businesses don't have to let you vape despite what bs ripoff ecig commercials show.

When I first started vaping I had one battery that looked like a cig (white w/ tan filter) and I realized I was more comfortable vaping outside w/ one that didn't look like a cig - black battery, blue LED. I didn't want to look like I was smoking. I never bought a white battery again.

I have the opposite reaction. I love vaping in public. Given I haven't exactly ever vaped in public at a place where smoking was not allowed...except at the restaurant I work at and I only do it back in the kitchen out of customers sight. When I first started vaping my boss thought it was so neat that she made me demo it to some of our customers. I felt a bit put on the spot with that but if customers do see me vaping...like this police officer and his wife who saw me vaping outside while I was sweeping the lot and they were curious to what I was "smoking". I was happy to inform an LFO about my E-Cig.

The only other time it sort of bothers me is when I am outside with the smokers at school (almost finished with nursing school) and the smokers look at me like I have 3 heads and ask me about it...normally I don't mind but when I am taking a break from cramming for an exam the questions can be a bit grating. For the most part I am happy educating people about vaping though.

As long as you vape outdoors with some confidence and don't make it seem sketchy, most people will have no real reason to think it's wrong. Try to educate people if they do ask, you're only doing a favor to yourself, them and the community of vaping.

I've had folks come up to me when I was using a hookah outside of Starbucks (years ago), and they blurted out "THEY MADE BONGS LEGAL?!" in an angry tone. I had to explain and they were ok with it, same goes with the PV or "ecig".

Ok I guess where smoking is not allowed, would be my problem. By the way my vp looks just like a real one, so that is a good idea. I just wished I would see more people using the e- cigs too, that would make me feel better. Do you just ask when you go into a place or just do it and hope no one will say anything to you? I did not know some places you could not use them. I thought you could use them anywhere. Thanks

I've never been cavalier about smoking. I try to respect those around my by distancing myself in public. With vaping, I tend to be the same way. I don't like other people's second-hand smoke and the same goes for second-hand vapor.

Just remember, smoking real cigarettes will always be perceived with a negative connotation - much, much more so than vaping (hopefully). People will go out of their way to let you know just how displeased they are with you.

It's funny to me that I feel more self-aware with PV's than analogs. Perhaps it's the fact that I'm sucking on an electronic gizmo instead of burning paper and leaves.

I always ask when I'm on someone's property because I do not want to come across as arrogant and, more importantly, no one truly knows the health issues associated with vaping. My Dr, Dentist and Nose Surgeon encourage me to vape in their office hoping clients that smoke will take notice. Previous to speaking to them about vaping they had all sorts of wrong info and misinformation. When I first announced I was vaping I had printed out all sorts of documentation for them to read.
